geography

Location of the former municipality in the Weiz district

Arzberg is located in the district of Weiz in the Austrian state of Styria in the valley of the Raab . To the north of Arzberg is the entrance to the natural Raab Gorge, which is free to visit. To the east, the terrain rises steeply to the Sattelberg .

Structure of the former municipality

The former municipality of Arzberg consisted of a cadastral community and, at the same time, a locality, which consisted of the localities of Arztal, Blotschgraben, Breitenau, Buchberg, Burgstall, Feichtgraben, Geigental, Kaltenberg, Oberbuchberg, Rauchberg, Stubegg ruins, Schöcklgraben, Stadlberg, Wallhütten, Wiedenberg and Wölling .

geology

The silver-bearing lead and zinc ores formed around 400 million years ago. Ore sludge was deposited as a result of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes on the bottom of what was then the primordial sea, which extended in the area of today's Arzberg region. In the course of the earth's development, the ore sludge formed the Arzberg ore deposits .

history

In a deed of donation dated July 12, 1242 , Arzberg, which means something like mountain from ore , was first mentioned as "Aerzeperck" .

Mining

Already in the early Middle Ages, silver-containing galena (lead gloss) was mined as a raw material for a rich extraction of silver , with which the Graz Mint was supplied. In 1424 the mining activity was legally regulated by the "Rechberger Bergordnung". The heyday of the mining of galena for silver and lead production was in the 18th century. 0.5 kg of silver was extracted from 1000 kg of rock. The mining was still carried out in the 19th century. The local community as an autonomous body came into being in 1850. From 1900 to 1927, galena and sphalerite (zinc blende) were mined to extract lead, silver and zinc . In 1903, the mine was owned by the Societé des Zincs et Plombs Argentifers de Styrie , Lausanne ( Switzerland ). In 1909, the Societé des Mines d'Haufenreith , Paris ( France ) became the new owner. During the First World War , the region's raw material deposits were placed under military administration from 1915 to 1918. As a result, an administrator had to be appointed due to economic difficulties. After the First World War, Montana Bergbau Industrie Ges.mbH owned the mines from 1918 to 1924 . In 1924 the owner changed again, the mines now belonged to Haufenreither Blei- und Zinkerz Bergbau AG , Vienna, which ceased mining in the Arzberg area in 1927. After the security work was completed, the miners were announced in 1935 . In the years 1973 to 1975 the deposits were again examined for profitability of mining. A resumption of mining activity was rejected. One of the old tunnels was set up as a show mine.

In 1995, for example, the demonstration and teaching tunnel in the Arzberg community started operations, making it the only silver mine in the Graz highlands that can still be walked through. The path through the show mine, which can only be visited as part of a guided tour, leads from the Raab tunnel, over the Raab shaft and the Arzberg shaft to the Erb tunnel.
