Augustin Bogislaus Weltzel (born April 9, 1817 in Jeltsch-Laskowitz , Oels district , † November 4, 1897 in Tworkau , Ratibor district ) was a German Catholic priest, historian of Upper Silesia .

Life

Augustin Weltzel was the son of a forest ranger on the property of the Count of Saurma -Jeltsch. After graduating from high school in Breslau and studying theology at the University of Breslau , he was ordained a priest on May 8, 1841.

He was first parish vicar in Stettin , then in Pommersdorf . In 1857 he became pastor in Tworkau with the support of Count von Saurma-Jeltsch , where he stayed until his death in 1897.

In 1863 he was elected member of the Reichstag for the Ratibor district. In 1866 he was awarded the IV class of the Red Eagle Order by the Prussian King Wilhelm II . In 1899 the University of Wroclaw awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Weltzel was already interested in history during his stay in Pomerania . After moving to Tworkau in Upper Silesia, he began researching the archives of Ratibor , Breslau , Opole , Berlin , Troppau , Prague and Vienna .

He wrote numerous monographs on Upper Silesian cities and noble families. He read and arranged the Schirnding collection with the collection that has survived today.

Since 2007, the Movement for the Autonomy of Silesia has awarded the Augustin Weltzl Prize “The Upper Silesian Tacitus ” for scientific treatises on the history of Upper Silesia.
