The hopelessly overcrowded wagons are crowded with travelers on their way to their families. The students still manage to claim the last free places for themselves. Only Sina is forced to go to another compartment, where a little later she meets her husband Carl, from whom she has been separated for a year after his affair with a colleague.

Both react surprised to the presence of the other and meet at a distance - especially since other travelers in the compartment are attending the play, including the lonely, heavily pregnant violinist Min Wang and the talkative Austrian pensioner couple Lisl and Franz, who are on their way to Christmas with his friends adult children is. Also present is Fritz, who was born in Berlin and who had wanted to spend the holidays together with his friend in the snow, but after a dispute is now starting the journey back home alone. Sina and Carl also fall back into their old habits and get into quarreling again.

The situation came to a head when a tree fell on the rails and blocked the train from continuing for hours. Annoyed but still patient, the passengers celebrate Christmas Eve together with coffee and music on the train. Felix and his classmate Jakob, on the other hand, decide not to sit around idly any longer and set off for the neighboring forest to get help. With Sina and Carl, the disappearance of the two goes unnoticed for the time being. After Min Wang went into labor, Sina assists her husband, who is a doctor, with the birth. When the train attendant Ulla points out to the couple that the children are missing, Sina and Carl follow the two into the snow-covered forest, where there is another confrontation, but they soon meet Felix and Jakob.

Back at the train, the Red Cross has meanwhile arrived and has taken care of Min Wang and the newborn. While guests the celebrations outside embarrassed to a snowball fight to deliver and flares to ignite, Sina and Carl lead to clear the air, where they reminisce and approach again. At the urging of Lisl and Franz, Fritz also decides to jump over his shadow and calls his friend to save the situation between them. A little later the train finally continues its journey to Munich , where Carl says goodbye to Sina and Felix. But they promise each other that Christmas Day will be celebrated together - contrary to what was planned.

Reviews

Noethen and Szyszkowitz received positive reviews for playing together.

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Tittelbach.tv described the production as “intelligent, lovingly made screwball comedy” and above all praised the film's “virtuoso visual design”. Cinematographer Johannes Geyer was “sometimes daring trips and amazing perspectives available”, the maneuvers of which were “quite impressive” in view of the limited set images. Gangloff also found words of praise for the cast. For Szyszkowitz and Noethen, the chamber play is "a found food", which they also "exploited extensively". It is "impressive how much director Gabriela Zerhau got out of the little plot".

Der Spiegel found that the plot of Christmas, of all times, had sprungfromthe “ fantasy land of TV movies”. The story “only lacked the shepherds and the angels. Unfortunately, what is really missing is the staging precision that only produces accurate comedy. So much remains in what is merely nicely meant ”. TV Today declared the film a “warm appeal to love” and summed up that the story was “a bit thin”, but the comedy was “thanks to the extremely lively, relaxed production and the fine photography”. Prisma found that Zerhau was staging an “accurate family comedy with a serious, but not too gloomy background”. The good cast ensemble ensures the best entertainment.
