history

Until 1990

In 1922, the foundation stone for today's UNIQA Insurance Group was laid with the establishment of the Insurance Company of the Austrian Federal States ( Bundesländer-Versicherung ). In 1975 the Federal State Insurance took part in the Salzburger Landes-Versicherung, founded in 1811 . This was run as a 100 percent subsidiary until 2016.

1991 to 2010

In 1993 the Bundesländer-Versicherung was merged with Raiffeisen Versicherung , which is still an independent sales brand of Uniqa Austria. In 1997, the BARC consisting of the federal states, Austria, Raiffeisen and Collegialität insurance was founded. The Austria-Collegialität Austrian Versicherung AG was from 1991 to 1997 existing insurance company created by the merger of Austria (with precursors to 1860 reaching back) and Collegialität (founded 1899). In 1999, today's UNIQA Insurance Group AG was founded. It is the parent company for the 100% subsidiaries UNIQA Österreich Versicherungen AG and UNIQA International AG of the insurance group and acts as the central reinsurer. In 2000 and the following years, the Uniqa Insurance Group gradually took over, acquired or founded further insurance companies in various European countries. In 2004 the Uniqa Tower was opened in Vienna. The acquisition of the German Mannheimer AG Holding was also one of the most important milestones of the year.

Since 2011

On July 1, 2011, a new board team led by Andreas Brandstetter took over the management of the Uniqa Insurance Group and started the Uniqa 2.0 program with the support of the core shareholders. In April 2012, the sale of the majority stake in Mannheimer AG Holding to the Continentale Insurance Association was legally completed. In May 2013 Uniqa Austria rose to become the largest insurance company on the domestic market. In October 2013, the Serbia and Croatia business of Baloise was taken over for 75 million euros, thus strengthening Uniqa's existing business in these countries. In the same year the Uniqa Group carried out a capital increase. 88 million new shares plus 6.65 million over-allotment shares were issued, bringing in gross proceeds of 757 million euros. The free float increases from 6.9 to 35.4 percent. UNIQA Insurance Group AG was included in the leading index of the Vienna Stock Exchange, the ATX , on March 24, 2014 . In January 2016, the Uniqa Insurance Group started the largest investment program in the company's history worth around 500 million euros. In October 2016, the previous subsidiaries Finance Life, Raiffeisen Versicherung and Salzburger Landes-Versicherung were merged into Uniqa Austria. In December 2016, the company decided to sell the Italian group companies. In December 2017, Kurt Svoboda took over the chairmanship of UNIQA Austria Insurance AG . In 2018 Uniqa sold its 11.4 percent stake in Casinos Austria to the Czech Sazka Group. In 2018, the guideline for Responsible Investments and thus the exit from the coal business was passed. Uniqa was the first insurer in Austria to be awarded the Ögut bronze sustainability certificate. In February 2020 Uniqa acquired Axa's subsidiaries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia for one billion euros. The acquisition was approved by the EU Commission in July 2020 .

criticism

In 2002 Uniqa was given a Big Brother Award in the Business and Finance category, because when taking out supplementary health insurance, a very extensive “consent to the determination, transmission and use of data” is required. The insurance company can obtain the data from doctors, hospitals, social security agencies, authorities and other institutions that might know something about the health status of the insured person.

In 2015 Uniqa received another Big Brother Award in the Business and Finance category , for the Uniqa Safeline product and travel profile-dependent insurance tariffs using telematics data .
