The Austrian Baseball Federation (ABF) is the federal professional association for baseball and softball in Austria .

General

The Austrian Baseball Federation (ABF) was founded in 1983 as the Austrian Baseball and Softball Association (ÖBSV), and in 2005 it was renamed the Austrian Baseball Federation to avoid confusion with other Austrian clubs and associations that also bear the abbreviation ÖBSV .

In addition to the Austrian professional association, there are the regional associations NÖBSV (Lower Austrian baseball and softball association, which also includes Burgenland), OÖBSV (Upper Austrian baseball and softball association, including Salzburg), StBSV (Styrian baseball and softball association, including Carinthia), TBSV (Tyrolean baseball and Softball Association), VBSV (Vorarlberger Softball and Baseball Association) and WBSV (Vienna Baseball-Softball Association).

The presidium consists of 5 people, in addition to the president, these are the vice-presidents baseball, vice-presidents softball, vice-presidents young talents and vice-presidents finance.

The ABF is a member of the international umbrella association for baseball and softball WBSC , the European baseball association CEB , the European softball association ESF , the international baseball association IBAF and the international softball association ISF . In the CEB, a member of the Austrian Baseball Federation currently holds an office on the board and the position of Executive Director of the WBSC is currently also held by an Austrian.

Baseball games were already being played in Austria in the post-war period by the US troops stationed in Austria, but this development came to an end with the withdrawal of the occupying power of the USA in 1955. Baseball has been played in Austria again since the early 1980s. In 1982 there were three clubs in Vienna ( WBV Homerunners , Roadrunners and City Boys), of which only the WBV Homerunners is active.

In 1984 the first Austrian championships, in which four teams from Vienna and Linz participated, were held. In 1990, baseball was recognized in Austria by the Austrian Federal Sports Organization . Associated with this, the baseball, fastpitch softball and coed slowpitch softball champions have been able to call themselves Austrian national champions since 1991 .

The first softball championship in Austria was held in 1992. In 1994 the Austrian national team took part in the Fastpitch Softball World Championships in St. Johns , Canada .

A total of 20 European championships, European championship qualifiers and European cup qualifiers have taken place in Austria so far. The biggest competition was the 2010 European Junior Softball Championship, which was held with 15 participating nations in Vienna at the Spenadlwiese sports center and at the Freudenau sports complex. The European softball championship B-Pool 2001 also in Vienna and the Coed Slowpitch European softball championship 2004 in Linz were other ESF competitions that took place in Austria. In 2001 the Softball European Cup of the Cup Winner B-Pool was held in Wiener Neustadt .

In baseball, the highlights so far have been the B-Level European baseball championships in 2013 and 2015 in Vienna and the 1998 European baseball championship qualifiers in Vienna and Stockerau with 15 participating nations. In 2017 the U15 European baseball championship took place in Wiener Neustadt. The European Junior Baseball Championship qualifier has already been held three times in Austria, in 1995 in Stockerau, 1998 in Wiener Neustadt and 2010 in Attnang-Puchheim .

In 2009, 2011 and 2012 one of the baseball European Cup qualifier groups took place in Attnang-Puchheim. The qualifiers for the meanwhile no longer held baseball cup of the cup winners were given to Vienna in 1995, to Linz in 2000 and to Kufstein in 2004 . The CEB-Cup is also no longer held, a qualifier was held four times in Austria (1996 and 1997 in Vienna, 1999 in Linz and 2004 in Wiener Neustadt).

The highest Austrian league, the Baseball League Austria , will be divided into two divisions from 2017 . OST with Stockerau Cubs, Diving Ducks, Vienna Metrostars, Vienna Wanderers and Traiskirchen Grasshoppers. WEST with Attnang-Puchheim Athletics, Dornbirn Indians, Feldkirch Cardinals, Hard Bulls and Kufstein Vikings. The regional leagues (Middle, East, West) and the regional leagues (East, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) continue to exist as lower divisions.

The first participation in the European Baseball Cup took place in 1988 when the Vienna Homerunners competed in the European Cup in Antwerp . Two years later, in 1990, the Austrian national baseball team took part in the qualifier for the European baseball championship for the first time in Parma .

The greatest success of the national team was participation in the 2007 European Baseball Championship in Barcelona , where 11th place could be achieved. In 2017 Austria's men made it to the B-Pool European Championship in Belgrade .

The need for young talent was recognized early on and the Austrian championships have been held annually in different categories for young talent since 1992. The ÖMs are currently held in the categories juniors (16–18 years), youth (14–16 years), PONY (12–14 years), students U13 (10–12 years) and students U10 (under 10 years). As a supplement, the comparative competitions of the regional associations, the federal state cups, take place annually in the youth and schoolchildren categories. In order to promote baseball and softball, intensive cooperation with schools throughout Austria is maintained.

Austrian junior national teams have been taking part in the European championships since 1993. The juniors were the first team from Austria to take part in the European Championship in Barcelona in 1993. In 1997 she took part in the European Youth Championship (Cadets), and in 2006 at the European Schoolchildren (Juveniles).

The most successful club in the history of baseball in Austria are the Vienna Homerunners, who have won the Austrian championship title a total of 12 times with the Vienna Lions team, who have called themselves Vienna Metrostars since 2002. There are also 23 Austrian championship titles in the junior division.

The international baseball and softball tournament Finkstonball, which is organized every year at Whitsun by the Attnang-Puchheim Athletics , is now one of the most important tournaments in Europe. In addition to reigning baseball champions from all over Europe, the baseball and softball national teams from Switzerland and Turkey were among the guests. The tournament has been accompanied by the Whitsun Spectacle music festival for years .

Softball

The champion in fast pitch softball is determined in the Austrian Softball League . The softball Bundesliga still exists as a second division.

At the European level, Austria was able to establish itself among the top nations. At the European Cup in Haarlem 2009, the Dornbirn Sharx were the first team that did not come from the Netherlands or Italy to win the European Champions Cup. At the European Championships in 2007 and 2009, 6th and 7th place respectively could be achieved.

Slowpitch softball is becoming more and more important. Currently it is mainly played in leagues organized by clubs. The annual highlight is the Austrian Coed Slowpitch Softball Championships held in autumn.

Austrian Masters (General Class)
