The Berlin Messe Nord / ICC station is an S-Bahn station in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg on Neue Kantstrasse and the border with the Westend district . It is located on the Ringbahn and until 1944 also had a direct connection to the Stadtbahn . In operation Number Directory of DB Netz he is called Berlin Messe Nord / ICC , abbreviated BMN . It is listed as Messe Nord / ICC (Witzleben) in the DB Station & Service directories. The addition to brackets refers to the old name Witzleben , which the station carried until 2002. In operational terms, the station is a stop without switches.
The station is on the list of monuments of the state of Berlin. The monument protection refers to the S-Bahn platform built between 1913 and 1916 in its current form, the northern and southern station buildings. The two stairways lead south to the East Prussia Bridge and north to the Dresselsteg .
The station serves as a feeder station to the Berlin exhibition center and for the Central Bus Station Berlin (ZOB), which is around 300 meters away .
history
As early as 1908, the Charlottenburg subway line had been extended to Reichskanzlerplatz and cut the ring line at the Kaiserdamm Bridge . In order to enable a change between the U-Bahn and the Ringbahn, it was planned to build a station on the Ringbahn near the intersection. The station was built according to plans by August Bredtschneider within three years and opened to traffic on April 1, 1916. The system consisted of two symmetrically arranged central platforms , at the northern and southern ends of which there are two almost identical reception buildings. The eastern platform was used for trains to and from the Stadtbahn, the ring-rail trains drove to the western one. Only in the following Westend station was there a track connection between the two lines. In operational terms, Witzleben was a stop on two parallel routes.
In 1944, operations on the connecting curve to the Charlottenburg train station and thus to the city railroad were stopped due to bomb damage and were not resumed after the Second World War . As a result, the city platform was no longer served and fell into disrepair. The ring platform, however, was still served. Due to the increasing separation of the two halves of the city and finally also the S-Bahn network, the number of passengers decreased rapidly. The temporary closure came with the Reichsbahnerstruck in 1980 .
The station was not reactivated until the Ringbahn reopened on December 17, 1993. The roof of the ring platform was repaired even before the plans for recommissioning. This has also been redesigned to make it more passenger-friendly and a little wider. As a result, the vehicle profile of the S-Bahn trains has extended right up to the old city platform. In order to prevent passengers unfamiliar with the location from getting off on the wrong side, warning signs and fences were installed on the platform that is no longer in use. The unused stairway was torn down in mid-2015.
Connection
The S-Bahn station is served by lines S41, S42 and S46 on the Berlin Ringbahn. There is a direct transfer option to the bus service of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe . In addition, the Kaiserdamm underground station is on the U2 line , a short distance from the train station.
