The Rheydt-Odenkirchen station is a station in the Mönchengladbach district of Odenkirchen on the Cologne-Ehrenfeld – Rheydt railway line . From 1905 to 1986 the station was a separation station . Its historical platform canopy and its pedestrian tunnel are listed buildings.

history

Odenkirchen station 1874

The station was opened under the name Odenkirchen in 1870 at route kilometer 6.9 of the Mönchengladbach – Stolberg railway line. 1905–1945 there was a single-track connection to Rheydt freight yard, in 1908 the similarly single-track connection to Rheydt Hauptbahnhof , which is now part of the Cologne-Ehrenfeld – Rheydt line, was laid out in parallel .

On August 1, 1929, Odenkirchen was united with Rheydt , Munich-Gladbach , Giesenkirchen and Schelsen to form the new city of Gladbach-Rheydt . This town was divided again in 1933, but Odenkirchen, Giesenkirchen and Schelsen remained near Rheydt and the station was renamed Rheydt-Odenkirchen in 1962 . However, this name was not changed with the renewed incorporation of Rheydt into Mönchengladbach on January 1, 1975. In 1985, passenger traffic on the Mönchengladbach – Stolberg line between Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof and Rheydt-Odenkirchen was discontinued, and in 1986 the line north of the station was dismantled.

Since October 11, 2004, the wooden roof structure on the central platform and the underpass between the platforms are under monument protection. The station building was demolished in spring 2012, and P + R parking spaces were created in its place by the end of August 2013 .

Platforms and tracks

Today the Odenkirchen train station has three tracks, two of which are platform tracks. The central platform is 200 m long and 38 cm high on both tracks. The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr announced in February 2016 that the platform would be increased to 76 cm by 2023 at the latest as part of the modernization offensive 3 (MOF 3) co-financed by the federal government and the state, and that the equipment would be modernized. Platform roofing

The platform roof with underpass was built in 1912/13. It was entered under No. K 086 on January 23, 2004 in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach .

The 80 m long and 7.5 m wide platform canopy stands on the central platform between the tracks 6 and 7. It consists of a series of 18 consecutively placed post pairs separated by a pincer construction with braces, struts and purlins is stiffened and Rafter the roof boarding with tar paper covering. The stands stand on base stones (mainly made of basalt lava). The structural timbers of the canopy originally had a dark red paint, the underside of the gable roof was kept white. The top coats are heavily weathered.

The roofing covers the pedestrian underpass of the central platform, which is originally preserved and is represented by white-glazed tile facing with a green decorative frieze (ladder motif) as the upper end on the walls, basalt lava block steps, handrails and iron parapet railing with oval decorative elements between the vertical struts and horizontal bands .

In contrast to this, the western side of the staircase and the southern front side have subsequently received a wooden panel instead of the metal railing. Until December 2003, the historical roofing of the underpass directly on the station building was still preserved. It has since been dismantled.
