Beauchamp (noble family, Worcester)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beauchamp family was an Anglo-Norman aristocratic family who were the leading aristocratic family in Worcestershire from the 12th century and who inherited the office of sheriff of Worcestershire. It is to be distinguished from the Beauchamp family from Bedfordshire , whereby a relationship between the two is suspected, but has not yet been proven.

In 1267 William (V) de Beauchamp inherited the title of Earl of Warwick , which was traditionally associated with the possession of Warwick Castle . In 1444 Henry de Beauchamp was raised to the rank of Premier Earl of the Realm and was thus - after the Duke of Norfolk - the second highest peer in the kingdom. On April 14, 1445, he was appointed Duke of Warwick , but he died two months later, on June 11, 1445 without a male heir, whereby the duke title and the male line of the Beauchamp expired.

Another William de Beauchamp was appointed Baron Bergavenny (now Abergavenny) in 1392 , his son Richard was appointed Earl of Worcester in 1421 , and this title was soon lost (1422) due to a lack of male heirs.

In both cases (Warwick and Abergavenny), the Beauchamp family was inherited by the Nevill family .
