Bent Jædig
Bent Jædig (born October 18, 1935 in Copenhagen ; † June 9, 2004 ) was a Danish jazz musician ( tenor saxophone and flute ), who was considered a father figure of modern jazz in Denmark.
Life
Jædig first learned classical clarinet from the age of 13 before switching to the tenor saxophone. From 1957 he worked mainly in Germany, where he first played in a quartet with Rafi Lüderitz and Attila Zoller . At the end of the 1950s, he led a band with Rudi Fuesers in Germany , who also performed with Peter Herbolzheimer . In 1960 he played for Albert Mangelsdorff . He was best known from the 1960s onwards for his collaboration with Allan Botschinsky and Bent Axen , with whom he recorded for the Danish branch of Debut Records . In 1962 he appeared in Spain with Tete Montoliu , then with Karl Berger and from 1966 with Dusko Goykovich . He also took part in the performances of Gunther Schuller's jazz opera The Visitation . In 1967 he played his first album under his own name with Axen and Botschinsky as well as Goykovich, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Alex Riel ( Danish Jazzman ). In the 1960s he also played with the Dollar Brand Quintet with Don Cherry , Jimmy Woode , the Philly Joe Jones Quintet with Dizzy Reece and Louis Hjulmand , and he also played a trio with Hugo Rasmussen (bass) and Kresten Osgood (drums) in a duo with the pianist Carsten Dahl .
From the 1970s onwards he played Americans living and working in Denmark such as Wild Bill Davison , Art Farmer , Stan Getz , the Thad Jones Big Band ( Live at Montmartre , 1978), Duke Jordan , Horace Parlan ( Arrival , 1973), Sahib Shihab ( Orgy in Rhythm ) and in the Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band . In the 1980s he played in the Erling Kroner Tentett, in 1985 he took part in the Danish radio big band directed by Palle Mikkelborg on the Miles Davis album Aura and in 1987 he recorded with Pierre Dørges New Jungle Orchestra . In 1983 he was honored with the Ben Webster Prize .
At the end of the 1990s he played in a joint quintet with Dennis Drud, Erling Kroner , Jørgen Emborg and Peter Hansen. After his death in 2004, the saxophonist Charles Davis recorded the album Charles Davis Plays the Music of Bent Jaedig in his honor in 2006 . In 2008 the Jazzhus Montmartre hosted a Bent Jaedig Memorial Award Celebration . a. the Hugh Steinmetz Quintet performed.
