Otto Bernhard von Schkopp (born February 5, 1817 in Poland ; † October 8, 1904 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian infantry general and governor of Strasbourg .

Life

Bernhard was the son of the former captain in the "von Brüsewitz" dragoon regiment and telegraph inspector in Paderborn , Heinrich Gotthard Bogislav von Schkopp (1782-1852) and his wife Wilhelmine Elisabeth, née von Hanff († 1820).

career

Schkopp visited the Joachimsthalsche school in Berlin and studied in Bonn and Berlin theology . In Bonn he became a member of the Corps Rhenania in 1836 . On April 1, 1840, he appeared as a fusilier in transit in the Infantry Regiment. 13 one, was in 1841 as a second lieutenant in the Infantry Regiment. 37 were added and served from 1843 to 1847 as a regimental adjutant . On August 5, 1843, he was transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 25 and in 1848 he was commanded as an adjutant to the General Command of the VIII Army Corps. On January 16, 1849, he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant in Infantry Regiment No. 30 , and in 1852 to Captain in Infantry Regiment No. 36 . In 1856 he became company commander in Infantry Regiment No. 35 . In August 1857 he joined the General Staff , in January 1858 he joined the General Staff of the 11th Division .

In March 1858 Major Schkopp became leader of the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 18 , then battalion commander in the 3rd Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 58 and on October 18, 1861 promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In August 1864 he was transferred to the War Ministry as department head and promoted to colonel on June 18, 1865 . In the campaign against Austria in 1866 he was in command of the Pomeranian Reserve Infantry Regiment in the 2nd Reserve Army Corps. On April 4, 1867, he was appointed commander of the 6th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 68 . From June 1869 he was major general and commander of the 44th Infantry Brigade . He took part in the Franco-Prussian War from the Battle of Wörth to Paris as leader of the 22nd Division . During the siege of Paris he was the leader of the 21st Division . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Schkopp was appointed commander of the 27th Infantry Brigade after the peace treaty on June 17, 1871. This was followed by a position as commander of the 31st division from April 12, 1873, and in this capacity he was promoted to lieutenant general on September 2, 1873 . On January 26, 1878, he became governor of Strasbourg. Out of consideration for the health of his wife, Schkopp submitted his departure in the spring of 1881 . This was granted to him on March 12, 1881 while simultaneously conferring the character of General of the Infantry.

family

Schkopp was married twice. On June 2, 1849, he married Louise Charlotte Amalie Wilhelmine Emilie (1827-1853), daughter of General Wilhelm von Wentzel (1791-1868) in Luxembourg . After their death he married Amalie Henriette Karoline, born Freiin von Breidenbach zu Breidenstein (1829-1897) in Wallau on October 31, 1855 .
