Prince Karl Wilhelm Bernhard zu Solms-Braunfels (born April 9, 1800 in Braunfels , † August 24, 1868 in Oberbiel ) was a Hanoverian and Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

origin

Bernhard was a member of the German dynasty of Solms-Braunfels . He was the second-born son of Prince Wilhelm Christian Karl zu Solms-Braunfels (1759-1837) and the Wild and Rhine Countess Auguste zu Salm-Grumbach (1771-1810). Ferdinand zu Solms-Braunfels (1797–1873) was his older brother, Alexius zu Bentheim and Steinfurt (1781–1866) and Johann August Karl zu Wied (1779–1836) were his brothers-in-law. He himself remained unmarried and died without leaving any biological children.

Military career

Solms-Braunfels began his career in the Prussian army in 1821 as a second lieutenant , aggregated to the regiment of the Gardes du Corps . In 1827 he was promoted to Rittmeister , in 1832 he was promoted to major and leader of the 2nd contingent of the 1st Battalion (Neuwied) of the 29th Landwehr Regiment. In 1838 he received his farewell as a colonel .

As major general à la suite in the army , he then entered service in Hanover in 1839 . There he was also President of the Hanover State Council . In 1845 he rose to lieutenant general and in 1855 to general of the cavalry à la suite.

Again in Prussian service, he was employed in 1867 with the character of general of the cavalry with officers à la suite by the army.

Like his brother Ferdinand, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge Marc Aurel zum Flammenden Stern in Marburg ; even his father was a Freemason .
