Berzdorf is the northernmost and, with around 2950 households, the third largest district of the city of Wesseling in the Rhein-Erft district in the south-west of North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

Berzdorf is surrounded by several gravel pits and a flat landscape characterized by traditional agriculture , but is itself on a chain of foothills in the Ville . In the north, the place borders on the Cologne districts of Meschenich and Immendorf , in the west on the city of Brühl with its inner-city district east , in the south on the Wesselingen district of Keldenich and in the southeast on the Wesseling local recreation area Entenfang with its two lakes and the adjoining bird sanctuary .

The gravel pits in the west of Berzdorf are to be renaturalized by 2027. A seven-hectare bathing lake is also to be created. The Palmersdorfer Bach , which is partly underground, flows through the center of the village . With 429 hectares, Berzdorf makes up around 18 percent of the entire Wesselingen urban area.

history

In 1173 Berzdorf was first mentioned in a document as Bertelsdorf . The medieval tax register of the Cologne archbishops mentions Bertensdorf as a church location after 1300 . The Hagenhof estate , which is still in use today, presumably dates back to the early days of the place and may have been the seat of a certain Bartel or Berthold from Franconia . Country sovereign belonged Berzdorf by the end of the 18th century than glory in the possession of the Cologne Saint Gereon-pin for office Brühl in the Electorate of Cologne . In 1932 the place came to the newly established Wesseling Office and after its dissolution on August 1, 1961, it was incorporated into the then municipality and today's city of Wesseling. From January 1, 1975 until the city of Wesseling regained its independence on June 1, 1976, Berzdorf belonged to the city of Cologne.

culture and education

Cultural life in Berzdorf is mainly shaped by numerous leisure clubs. These include the shooting club founded in 1872 , the volunteer fire brigade founded in 1901 and a number of carnival societies . In football the place is represented by the football club SSV Berzdorf , founded in 1929 and playing in the district league . Furthermore, the baseball and softball playing sports club Vermins B&SC , which was established in 1990, is based in Berzdorf. The sports center of the place is among other things the fitness center Sport-Oase , in which between 2007 and 2015 the kickboxing club Balance of Power was housed.

Berzdorf has four kindergartens and the Catholic primary school Brigidaschule .

Attractions

In the center of the village 1856 after plans of the Cologne architect is Henry Schmidt nail in the Gothic Revival was built in the style Catholic church Sorrows , which replaced a smaller previous church. The Berzdorf Church was first mentioned in 1286 in a document from the St. Gereon Foundation in Cologne. A Pietà dates from the 14th century and was donated to the church by Nikolaus von Ollheim on December 23, 1649, immediately after the end of the Thirty Years' War . The organ was built in 1869 by the Linnich organ builder Michael Dautzenberg. Also worth seeing are the water tower on Langenackerstraße, which went into operation in 1894, the Entenfang hunting lodge from the 18th century in the park of the same name, and Godorf Castle on Brühler Straße, which was extensively restored in 2015. Architecturally, the place is mainly characterized by low-rise architecture, such as single-family, terraced and older manor houses in the Rhenish small farmhouse style.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the north of Berzdorf is the most important industrial area of the city of Wesseling with numerous companies from the chemical and automotive industries, and to the north-east is the Lyondell Basell Group's chemical plant .

The closest connection points to Berzdorf's motorway traffic are Brühl-Ost on the A 553 and Brühl / Berzdorf and Godorf / Wesseling-Nord on the A 555 . The Berzdorfer station and the breakpoint Berzdorf-Nord were passenger trains until 1981 the cross rail of the KBE operated. Today only extensive goods traffic of the HGK takes place here, and the station also serves as a tariff point for goods traffic. Berzdorf can be reached by bus using the regular REVG service , which connects the place with the KVB stop Wesseling-Nord on the Rheinuferbahn and the DB train station in Brühl .

Personalities and politics

The artist Hans Geulig (1934–2004), whose work mainly consists of monotypes and was heavily inspired by the work of the Brühl artist Max Ernst , became known beyond Berzdorf . After completing a craft training, Geulig studied at the Paris Ecole ABC de Dessin in 1962 with a diploma. In 1972 he received the Max Ernst Scholarship from the city of Brühl and in 1991 the art prize from the city of Wesseling. Some of his works have been available for loan from the Wesselingen Artothek since 2002 .

Furthermore, the politician Alfons Müller comes from Berzdorf, who was acting mayor of the city of Wesseling from 1976 to 1994.

The mayor of Berzdorf, elected by the City Council of Wesseling, has been Ralf Daniel from the CDU since 2014 .
