The Black Eagles' T-50B are painted yellow, white and black. They are equipped with an internal smoke generation system that creates a thick trail of smoke. The planes are basically the same as the original T-50s except for the smoke generation system, multiple cameras, and two lights built into the wings.

The thick plumes of smoke of the Black Eagles aerobatic team are generated by injecting diesel and oil into the thrust nozzle. This mixture oxidizes immediately, leaving a white trail of smoke. There are two smoke tanks on the planes, each holding about 60 gallons of smoke oil. The smoke system can regulate the amount of oil that is to be released. So smoke can be generated for 7-20 minutes.

Accidents

  • On May 8, 1998, two of the team's aircraft collided in the air during a training flight. The team leader's plane crashed, killing him. The other plane landed with minor damage.
  • On May 5, 2006 at Suwon Air Base in Korea, during the Airshow for "Children's Day", Captain Kim Do-hyun's (33) A-37B crashed onto the edge of the runway. Kim's A-37B, finished the opposing A-roll maneuver, but Cpt. Kim's plane didn't rise after that. The crash was on the south side of the runway, 1.8 km from the audience. Thousands, including many children, witnessed the crash. Captain Bae Duk-hwan later commented that the pilot could have saved himself using an ejector seat, but he kept control of the plane until the end to make sure the plane would not crash into the crowd. "Cpt. Kim was buried in the National Cemetery with full military honors.
  • On November 15, 2012, a Black Eagles pilot was killed when an airplane hit a mountainside in the Hoengsong region, about 48 nm (90 km) east of Seoul. The cause was a maintenance error, caused by a forgotten cable, which was not reconnected after a repair and thus impaired the vertical flight control.
