Blasius Edler von Schemua (born January 2, 1856 in Klagenfurt ; † November 21, 1920 there ) was chief of the Austro-Hungarian General Staff and corps commander in World War I , most recently General of the Infantry .

Life

Born as the son of the kuk major Blasius Schemua in Carinthia , younger brother of the general of the infantry Johann Edler von Schemua (1850-1919).

Military career

He received his first military education at the cadet school in Marburg , after which he attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . In 1874 he was retired as a lieutenant in the Carinthian Infantry Regiment "Graf von Khevenhüller" No. 7 . From 1879 to 1881 he was a member of an Austrian military mission sent to Persia , after which he attended the war school in Vienna from 1882 to 1884 . In 1885 he entered the General Staff Service, became a captain in 1887 and until 1891 was assigned to the records office of the General Staff. From 1894 to 1897 he worked as a teacher for the army at the Vienna War School and was promoted to colonel in 1898 . In 1902 he became the commander of the 66th Infantry Regiment, in 1905 he took over the leadership of the 55th Infantry Brigade and was promoted to major general on May 14th . In 1908 he was given command of the 18th Infantry Troop Division in Ragusa . On May 3, 1909, he was raised to field marshal lieutenant and was appointed head of section to the War Ministry in Vienna. Appointed privy councilor in 1912 , he also dealt privately with philological and ethnographic issues and went on extensive study trips.

General of the Infantry Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf was dismissed as Chief of Staff in 1911 after a dispute with Emperor Franz Josef about a possible war with Italy . Archduke Franz Ferdinand succeeded in replacing the War Minister von Schönaich with the Kaiser , but had to accept Schemua's successor as Chief of the General Staff of the entire armed power on December 3, 1911. Schemua strengthened the expansion of the army and coordinated the preparations for the deployment in agreement with the German Chief of Staff von Moltke. Increased danger of war in the Balkans brought Conrad back to the lost position on December 12, 1912.
