Bonthe is a district of Sierra Leone with around 200,000 inhabitants (as of 2015). Its capital is Bonthe . The district is divided into eleven chiefdoms (chiefdoms) and the capital.

Bonthe is located in the Southern Province in the southwest of the country, on the Atlantic coast. The district covers an area of ​​3,468 km², which also includes Sherbro Island and other islands such as the Turtle Islands , Masa , Edmonstone and Rendell . There are also numerous small lakes in the Bonthe area.

The inhabitants of the Bonthe district belong to the ethnic groups of the Mende , Bullom-Sherbro , Temne and Loko and are mostly Muslim. The economy consists of fishing, rice cultivation and palm oil plantations.

In 2006 the district had 38 health facilities, including a state hospital, a mission hospital, two mission and two NGO clinics and an industrial clinic. In 2005, 0.7% of the residents were HIV positive. In 2004/2005 there were 85 primary and four secondary schools on the mainland, 67 primary and three secondary schools on the islands. The literacy rate in 2004 for the city of Bonthe was 56% (65% for men and 49% for women) and for the rest of the district it was 24% (men 34%, women 16%). 62.7% of the children in the city and 40.8% in the rest of the district attended school.

The construction of a new deep-water port has been planned since mid-2020 . The construction costs are given as 1.4 billion US dollars .
