Borislav (Boris) Ivkov ( Serbian - Cyrillic Борислав Ивков ; born November 12, 1933 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian chess master and was one of the leading chess players in Yugoslavia for decades .

Life

Already at the age of 14 he managed to become Yugoslavia's youth champion, two years later he won the national championship title by tied 4-7. Place at the Yugoslav Championship. In 1951, at the age of 18, he won the first U20 World Junior Championship , which was organized by FIDE . In the years 1964–1979 he qualified five times for the interzonal tournament and also reached the candidates' tournament once, in Amsterdam 1964 (7th place) . He lost in the quarterfinals ( Bled 1965) against the Dane Bent Larsen with 2.5: 5.5 (+1 = 3 −4). Ivkov won the Yugoslav championship in 1958 (shared with Svetozar Gligorić ), 1963 (shared with Mijo Udovčić ) and 1972.

Ivkov represented Yugoslavia at twelve Chess Olympiads from 1956 to 1980 and won six silver medals and four bronze medals with his team. As a single player, he won at the Olympics in 1962 of board 4 and 1970 on board 2 gold for the highest individual score in each of his board, he also won one each individual silver and bronze. Between 1957 and 1980 he took part in six European team championships , he won the individual ranking on the second board in Bath in 1973 and came second with the team in Hamburg in 1965 and in 1973 in each case. In 1970 he was placed on the tenth board of the world selection in the match between the USSR and the rest of the world and was defeated by Paul Keres 1: 3.

In the German Federal Chess League Ivkov played in the 1983/84 season at Königsspringer Frankfurt , who, however, withdrew his team after five of 15 rounds. In 1990 he played in the Spanish team championship on the top board of CA Endesa Ponferrada , with Partizan Belgrade he took part in the European Club Cup in 1976 and 1986 .

Ivkov achieved his best tournament result in Zagreb in 1965 , when he shared first place with Wolfgang Uhlmann and left reigning world champion Tigran Petrosjan behind. Ivkov won the championship of Yugoslavia five times. In 2006 he became European Senior Champion in Davos.

Due to his international success, he received the title of International Master from FIDE in 1954 and the title of Grand Master in 1955 .

Following the December 2013 Poděbrady discharged competition Snowdrops vs. Old Hands Ivkov has not played an Elo-rated game and is therefore listed as inactive at FIDE. Before the Elo rating was introduced, his best historical rating was 2715, which he achieved in October 1956.
