Brańsk ( Lithuanian Branskas ; Belarusian Бранск ) is a city in Poland in the Podlaskie Voivodeship . It forms a municipality in the Powiat Bielski .
history
Around 10/11 In the 19th century a wall was built at the junction of the Bronka and Nurzec rivers , and a small settlement was formed not far from it. The location on the trade route from Krakow to Lithuania was favorable. In 1422 a regional court was set up here. On January 18, 1493, Brańsk received from the Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander the Jagiellonian as the first city of Podlaskie the city charter according to Magdeburg law . In 1550 the św. Ducha (Holy Spirit) founded.
During the third partition of Poland , the city fell to Prussia . After the defeat by France, Prussia had to give up its eastern territories. The city became part of the Russian Empire.
During the First World War , the place was occupied by German troops in 1919. The Polish-Soviet War took place on 30./31. July 1920 a battle took place near the city. After the city was captured in the course of the Soviet advance, the Poles succeeded in integrating Brańsk into Poland on August 18, 1920.
With the beginning of the Second World War , the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht on September 7, 1939 , with the city center being destroyed. On September 25, the city was handed over to the Soviet Union under the Hitler-Stalin Pact and became part of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic . About 120 people were deported to Siberia during the Soviet occupation . With the beginning of the Germans' Russian campaign , the city was again occupied by the Germans in 1941. Around 2,000 Jews were locked up in a ghetto in the city and later deported to the Treblinka extermination camp and murdered there. A forced labor camp was then set up on the site of the ghetto. When the Wehrmacht had to withdraw in July, they destroyed, among other things, the church, the power station and the bridge in the city. At the end of the war, the city, which now belonged to Poland, was about 35 percent destroyed.
During an administrative reform, the city became part of the Białystok Voivodeship in 1975 . Since its dissolution, Brańsk has been part of the Podlaskie Voivodeship since 1999.
Population development
Of the 3,725 people who lived in the city in 1921, 58 percent were Jews and 40 percent Poles .
