history
The first documented mentions of the "forest village" Braunau, which is surrounded by the Wälzebach, come from the years 1261 and 1290; at that time the place was called "Brunowe". However, it is assumed that there was already a settlement in the area of today's Braunau in the Stone Age : readings and stone box graves .
Territorial reform
On October 1st, 1971 Braunau became part of Bad Wildungen as part of the regional reform in Hesse .

Attractions
One of the main attractions in Braunau is the baroque church built in 1728 by the Arols court builder Julius Ludwig Rothweil with the two-wing carved altar from 1523 from the workshop of the Franciscan monastery in Meitersdorf (near Frankenberg / Eder) . The carved altar was probably not intended for the Braunau church. How he got there is still unclear. In the middle part of the altar shows the crucifixion of Jesus in a moving crowd scene . The left side wing shows scenes from the life of Mary Magdalene : The washing of the feet (above) and the encounter with the risen Christ on Easter morning (below). The right wing is dedicated to John the Baptist. It shows the baptism of Jesus (above) and the execution of the Baptist (below).
The Braunauer Warte (former name: Bubenhäuser Warte) is a 9.8 meter high watch tower that has been preserved in the district and stands on a hill 379 meters above sea level . It was built from rubble stones around 1350 . Together with other towers, it belonged to the medieval Landwehr system of Wildungen. The towers were vantage points from which the tower crews could notice enemy troops or bands of robbers and notify the townspeople by smoke signals. Until 2006 the tower was filled with rubble and therefore not climbable. As a contribution to the state horticultural show in Bad Wildungen, the interior was exposed and a spiral staircase was installed. The 8.8 meter high viewing platform offers a view of the Kellerwald , Waldeck Castle and Dörnberg .
1.5 km west of Braunau and 800 meters southeast of Braunau waiting is on a five-armed crossroads a few meters within the western forest edge the striking Schnitzer oak ( natural monument ), named after the there in 1835 by poachers murdered Forest Runner Jakob Schnitzer.
