Breitenrode was founded in 1715. It is the only Drömlingsdorf with the ending -rode . In 1939 the place had 644 inhabitants. From 1945 the inner-German border was established and expanded. From 1954 until the fall of the Wall , Breitenrode was in the 5 km exclusion zone , which could only be entered by authorized GDR citizens.

Until 1952, Breitenrode belonged to the district of Gardelegen ; then it came to the newly formed Klötze district . Breitenrode was incorporated into Oebisfelde in 1994 and thus lost its political independence. On December 23, 1989, the border crossing between Breitenrode and Grafhorst was opened. From 1994 to January 1, 2005 the place belonged to the administrative community Oebisfelde, then from 2005 to 31 December 2009 the administrative community Oebisfelde-Calvörde in the Ohrekreis and from 2007 in the district of Börde . On January 1, 2010, the city of Oebisfelde-Weferlingen was founded due to a municipal reform in Saxony-Anhalt. Breitenrode, as a district of the former city of Oebisfelde, became a district of the new city of Oebisfelde-Weferlingen.

In 2017 the day care center “Storchennest” was closed.

Breitenrode is served by buses of the OhreBus Verkehrsgesellschaft (line 630) and the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel passenger transport company (PVGS, line 311) Monday to Friday, mainly for school trips. Until 1945, together with Grafhorst, Breitenrode owned the Grafhorst station on the Wittingen – Oebisfelde railway line . It was on the eastern side of the border. On July 1, 1945, operations between Rüben and Oebisfelde ceased.
