Brownsburg is a city in Hendricks County in the state of Indiana in the United States .

history

The town was founded in 1824 by a settler from Kentucky - James B. Brown - the name of the settlement goes back to his person. In 1828 the first elementary school was opened, which initially consisted of only one room. In 1863 the settlement was divided. The northern part kept its ancestral name and was still called Brown Township. However, the southern part was renamed Lincoln Township in recognition of Abraham Lincoln for his accomplishments in the American Civil War . From 1820 the place was connected to Indianapolis by stagecoach . In 1835 the two settlements were renamed Harrisburg. The name goes back to a wealthy timber merchant who settled in the city. Just one year later, the company was renamed again. After the opening of a post office in 1836, it was found that there was already a Harrisburg in the same county and that the old Brownsburg had to be used again. By the end of the 19th century, the city had quadrupled in area and had received the first rail connection in 1869.

In 1917 the first public library was opened and in 1950 the city received the first high school.
