The Bruchsee (also called Graebsee ) is an approx. 2 hectare large and a maximum of 11 meters deep lake in the Neustadt district of Halle (Saale) .

location

The lake is centrally located between the street named after it “Am Bruchsee”, the Neustadt– Nietleben section of the S7 S-Bahn line in Halle and the Neustadt stadium. The city park of the Neustadt adjoins its east and north banks.

While the bank area flattens out to the east, it rises to a steep rock face in the west. Clearly structured shell limestone layers can be seen on this.

Origin and use

A limestone quarry existed from 1891 to 1921 in place of today's lake . This is where the shell limestone , which originated in the Triassic approx. 240 to 233 million years ago, was extracted. The lime was used for cement production. After the limestone mining stopped, the lake was created by inflowing groundwater and rainwater.

From 1921 to the 1950s, the Graeb family's woodworking business existed on the south bank of the lake (from which the popular name Graebsee is derived ), who used the lake to water tree trunks. Structural remnants of the company above the south bank were preserved until the mid-1990s and were only demolished when new residential buildings were built.

At times the lake was used as a bathing establishment. In the 1970s there were plans to terracing part of the steep bank and to build an excursion café. However, the plans were never realized.

In 1979 the western part of the Bruchsee with its steep face was placed under protection as a natural monument .

For years, part of the water was used to air-condition the Prisma cinema, which was built in 1982/83 . With the demolition of the cinema, the associated regulation no longer existed, so that the water level rose noticeably in the following years. Since the installation of a new pump excess water is in the nearby now resistant Saugraben transferred, that through this to Saale passes. Thus, the lake is now part of the groundwater management for Halle-Neustadt.
