Caroline Cox, Baroness Cox
Caroline Anne Cox, Baroness Cox FRCN (born July 6, 1937 in London ) is a British politician and life peeress . She is the founder and CEO of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) organization. She is committed to humanitarian issues, especially for people with disabilities.
life and career
Baroness Cox was born Caroline Anne McNeill Love in 1937. Her father was a surgeon from Hertford . She attended Channing School in Highgate . She worked from 1958 as a nurse at the London Hospital and from 1960 as a head nurse and staff nurse at Edgware General Hospital . In 1959 she married Dr. Murray Newall Cox and was married to him until his death in 1997. They had three children, two sons and a daughter. She graduated from the University of London in the late 1960s and graduated in 1967 with a First Class Honors Degree in Sociology . As a research assistant at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne , she earned a Master of Arts in economics .
Academic career and follow-up activities
She then worked as a lecturer of Sociology at the Polytechnic of the University of North London worked and later became a professor ( Principal Lecturer ). From 1974, she was Head ( Head ) of the Institute of Sociology ( Department of Sociology ) and remained so from 1977 to 1977. was until 1983 Director of Nursing Education Research Unit at the Chelsea College of the University of London . She also became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons . During this time, Cox also dealt with educational policy . In 1993 she supported reforms aimed at limiting the influence of local education authorities and called for greater consideration of religious values in teaching. Because of her professional background in sociology, she wrote several books on the subject for nurses. She also wrote a book investigating alleged communist activities in 1975 at the Polytechnic of North London. She was Founding Chancellor of Bournemouth University and held this position from 1991 to 2001. She was the director of the Educational Research Trust and the Center for Social Cohesion . Currently (as of June 2010) she is the Non-Executive Director of the Andrei Sakharov Foundation .
In 2006 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dundee as Doctor of Laws . Cox supports cases of disability as a member of the World Committee on Disability . She is a jury member for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award , which is presented annually by the United Nations to a state that has achieved the goals of the UN World Program of Action Concerning Disabled Persons .
Membership in the House of Lords
After Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher recommended her appointment as a Working Peer , she was promoted to Life Peeress on January 24, 1983 as Baroness Cox , of Queensbury in Greater London. She sat in the House of Lords initially for the Conservative Party and was briefly Baroness-in-Waiting and Whip of the government in 1985 . Then she was Deputy Speaker ( Deputy Speaker ) of the House of Lords from 1986 to 2005. From 1986 to 2004 she was Deputy Chair of Committees . During the debates on the Education Reform Bill , Cox worked with Michael Alison to ensure that public education was primarily "Christian". She regularly participated in debates in the House of Lords on Africa and referred to other forgotten conflicts in letters to the press. In the fighting in Sudan they had already in September 1992 to and criticized the Islamist government of the country and supported the Christian-dominated Sudan People's Liberation Army of John Garang . She also criticized the behavior of the government of Muslim Azerbaijan in the Armenian breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh , which is mostly inhabited by Christians.
Cox belongs to several all party groups . Since 2002 she has been chairwoman of the Armenia Group . She is Vice-Chair ( Vice-Chair ) of North Korea Group since 2004 and Secretary ( Secretary ) of Indonesia Group since of 2006.
She lists Armenia , Myanmar , East Timor , Indonesia , Poland , Nigeria , North Korea , Sudan , Uganda and Sri Lanka as states of particular interest . She names human rights , humanitarian aid , education , health care and care as her political interests .
Working in public
Cox is considered a Eurosceptic. She rebelled against the Maastricht Treaty and supported a draft that provided for a nationwide referendum on ratification on July 14, 1993.
In May 2004, she and three other conservative peers signed a letter published by the UK Independence Party (UKIP) calling for their support in the European elections . The chairman of the Conservative Party , Michael Howard , then expelled them from the group. Cox has been a Crossbencher ever since .
She is one of 18 founders of the One Jerusalem organization, which aims to ensure that a united Jerusalem remains the undivided capital of Israel . On January 24, 2005, she became co-president of the Jerusalem Summit .
She is the founder of The International Islamic Christian Organization for Reconciliation and Reconstruction . Cox is also a supporter of the right to self-determination of the people in Nagorno-Karabakh or the Republic of Artsakh , which officially belongs to Azerbaijan . Frank Pallone, Jr. , the co-chair of the US Congress Committee on Armenia ( US Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues ), called it a "true Armenian nationalist who gave their lives for Armenia would give and Karabakh." On February 15, 2006, she was with awarded the Mkhitar Gosh Medal ( Mkhitar Gosh Medal ) of the President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan .
Between 1997 and 2000 the organization Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), of which Cox is a member , intervened directly in Sudan with its humanitarian commitment and bought the freedom of alleged slaves. In a letter to The Independent on Sunday , Cox said he had released a total of 2,281 slaves on eight visits to Sudan. As early as 1995, Cox had received the William Wilberforce Award for her fight against modern forms of slavery .
The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), which she founded in 2003, uses help and advice to achieve lasting changes for those people who are oppressed or persecuted and whose concerns are largely neglected by the international media. Cox attended HART aid programs in Nagorno-Karabakh, East and West Burma, Timor-Leste , India , Nigeria , South Sudan, and North Uganda .
Cox is vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea . She said that the American administration, led by Barack Obama , brought with it the possibility of ending hostilities and normalizing relations with North Korea.
In June 2002, Cox hosted a public presentation to mark the release of Great Britain has Fallen! , a book by the Nigerian missionary Wale Babatunde . Cox issued several statements that the book "shows the way forward" to reverse Britain's moral decline.
In February 2009, Cox sparked a controversial debate when she and Malcolm Pearson, Baron Pearson of Rannoch of UKIP invited Geert Wilders to show the anti-Islamic film Fitna in front of the House of Lords . Wilders was prevented from entering Great Britain by order of the British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith . Cox and Pearson then accused the government of playing down militant Islam.

She is Vice President of the Royal College of Nursing and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine . Cox is Chair of the International Islamic Christian Organization (IICORR), Chief Executive Officer of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trustee (HART). She is president of Tushinskaya Children's Hospital Charitable Trust , the Standing Conference of Women's Organizations and the Dean Close School Cheltenham , and trustee of the Siberian State Medical University and Patron ( Patron ) of Medical Aid for Poland Fund , Youth with a Mission ( Youth With a Mission ), Physicians for Human Rights UK and Premier Radio .
From 1999 to 2009 she was a member of the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation . She was honored with the Fridtjof Nansen International Foundation Award in 2003 . She is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Westminster .
In 1988 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy ( Hon PhD ) from the Polish University in London . She is also an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from the University of Utah , Honorary Doctor of Law from the Council for National Academic Awards , Honorary Doctorates from City University London , the University of Wolverhampton and the Department of Social Security (DSS) from Queen's University of Belfast . She also received honorary doctorates from the Yerevan State University and the University of Nagorno-Karabakh. She is an Honorary Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute . Cox has been Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland since 1990 .
