Life
Catherine Zeta-Jones grew up in Mumbles, Wales . Her father Dai Jones owned a candy factory. She has two brothers, David Jones and Lyndon Jones, who works for her production company. As a child, she suffered from a respiratory disease that required an operation on the trachea; the operation left a permanent scar.
Zeta-Jones, half Irish , half Welsh, felt called to show business as a child . She danced and sang among other things in a Catholic parish. She starred in the plays Annie and Bugsy Malone before moving to London at 15 to become an actress. At 17, she was lucky enough to get a leading role in the West End production of the musical 42nd Street . This made her breakthrough in the theater, at times she was on stage eight times a week.
In 1990, Zeta-Jones spent an entire year in France to play the title role in the film Sheherazade - With 1001 HP Into Adventure . On her return she played the eldest daughter of a farming family in the television series The Darling Buds of May . The series was a success and made her a star in England.
Meanwhile, she tried to advance her dream career as a singer and dancer. Her first single For All Time (1992) made it into the top 40 of the British charts. The single True Love Ways (1994) in a duet with David Essex made it to number 38 in the UK Top 75. Other songs such as In the Arms of Love and I Can't HelpMyself (1995) had little commercial success.
Zeta-Jones now focused on her acting career. This was followed by roles in the television series The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones and in the film Christopher Columbus - The Explorer in 1992. Through her appearance in the television production Titanic , Hollywood became aware of her. With a leading role in the movie The Mask of Zorro (alongside Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins , released in 1998), she also achieved her breakthrough in the international film business. Other successful productions followed, including Das Geisterschloss (1999), Traffic - Macht des Kartell (2000) and the film musical Chicago (2002).
On December 13, 1999, she got engaged to actor Michael Douglas , who was exactly 25 years her senior ; They married on November 18, 2000. With him she has a son (* 2000) and a daughter (* 2003). Since the marriage, her civil name has been Catherine Zeta-Jones-Douglas. For the role of Velma Kelly in Chicago , she received an Oscar in 2003 in the category Best Supporting Actress. She also received the British Academy Film Award for her performance in Chicago . A pregnancy had to be built into the role of Helena Ayala in Traffic , as Zeta-Jones was pregnant with her first son Dylan Michael at the time. Zeta-Jones has also been successful in advertising: in 2006 she was the highest-paid advertising star worldwide thanks to a two-year contract with T-Mobile for $ 16 million.
Since 2017 she has been increasingly seen on television, as Griselda Blanco in the biopic Cocaine Godmother , as Olivia de Havilland in the series Feud and since 2018 as the leading actress in the dramedy Queen America .
