Caxias , officially Município de Caxias , is a city in the state of Maranhão in Brazil . According to an estimate by the IBGE, 164,224 inhabitants lived in the town in 2018 .
history
In the 17th century, the area that housed large villages of the indigenous Timbiras and Gamelas was part of the French colonization attempts in South America known as France Équinoxiale . The name itself refers to lands near Lisbon that have been handed down as Cachias , in today's writing Quinta Real de Caxias . Caxias received the right to self-government as Cidade de Caxias on June 5, 1836 , previously (from 1811) it was known as Vila de Caxias das Aldeias Altas .

On July 22, 1939, the diocese of Caxias do Maranhão was by Pope Pius XII. built with the Apostolic Constitution from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão and subordinated to this as a suffragan . Since 1996 there has been a partnership between the Catholic parish of St. Georg in Saerbeck in the Münsterland region and the parish of Nossa Senhora de Nazareth in Caxias.
