Cento is a town with 35,449 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy .

Geographical location

Cento is located southwest of Ferrara on the border between the provinces of Ferrara and Modena and the metropolitan city of Bologna . The distance from the provincial capital Ferrara is 34 kilometers by road.

history

Cento's origins go back to very old settlements. Since 1250 the city has been under the rule of the bishops of Bologna . In 1502, Pope Alexander VI approved . Cento Alfonso d'Este as a dowry for his wife Lucrezia Borgia .

In Cento, the old system of Partecipanza (in dialect: Partazipanza) agraria is still in force today , that is, agricultural joint ownership , a property right that emerged in the 11th century from the inheritance law of the bishops of Bologna and the Abbey of Nonantola . This is a communal rule that is recognized by the state as a legal person . The form of ownership is based on regulations that have the force of law. According to these regulations, certain persons and their descendants are continuously entitled to usufruct . Cento is now a center of automated agricultural production.

Cento is the birthplace of the baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri , who is popularly known as il Guercino (the cross-eyed man) and who spent much of his life here. A collection of his works is exhibited in the city's Pinakothek.

One of the fatalities in the earthquake in northern Italy in 2012 came from Cento; among other things, the church dedicated to Martin von Tours collapsed .
