Charles Milby Dale (born March 8, 1893 in Browns Valley , Minnesota , † September 28, 1978 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1945 to 1949 .

Early years and political advancement

Charles Dale attended the University of Minnesota , where he studied law, among other things. After his admission to the bar in 1917, he first worked for a law firm in Minnesota. After the outbreak of World War I , he was first lieutenant in an artillery unit of the Coastal Corps, which was stationed in Portsmouth. In 1920 he also opened his own law firm in Portsmouth.

In 1921 Dale became an attorney for his new hometown and served as mayor between 1926 and 1928. He was to hold this office again between 1943 and 1944. Between 1933 and 1939 he was a member of the New Hampshire Senate with one interruption in 1937 . From 1935 to 1937 he was president of this body. In 1937 he was a member of the governor's advisory staff. In 1944 he was elected as the candidate of the Republican Party for the new governor of his state.

New Hampshire Governor

Charles Dale took up his new office on January 4, 1945 and, after being re-elected in 1946, could remain in this office until January 6, 1949. The end of the Second World War fell during his term of office . In New Hampshire, too, the returning soldiers had to be reintegrated into society, and the war invalids and relatives of the fallen had to be cared for. In addition to these war-related issues, a new pension insurance system was created for the civil service. The governor promoted both tourism and industry in his state.

After the end of his governorship, Dale retired from politics. He took care of his private and business affairs, which now also included banking. He also acquired the radio station WHEB , which he ran himself. Governor Dale died in September 1978. He and his wife, Marion Marvin, had two children.
