Charles Stebbins

Charles Stebbins (* 1789 in Williamstown , Berkshire County , Massachusetts , † 1873 ) was an American lawyer and politician from New York.

Career

Stebbins graduated from Williams College in 1807 , then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1810 and then practiced in Cazenovia, New York. In 1819 he married Eunice Masters (1794–1871).

He was a member of the New York Senate from 1826 to 1829 , where he represented the 5th District. When Martin Van Buren resigned as governor in March 1829 to take up the post of foreign minister , he was succeeded by lieutenant governor Enos T. Throop as governor and Stebbins, who had meanwhile been elected President pro Tempore , as acting lieutenant governor. Stebbins ran unsuccessfully for re-election to the New York Senate.

He was then appointed by the governor, from 1830 to 1840 as one of three bank supervisors. After his death he was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia.
