Career
society
At the age of eight, after a detour to judo , Christian Sprenger decided to play handball and went through the youth departments of Ludwigsfelder HC.
For the 1998/1999 season he moved to the B youth team of SC Magdeburg . As a youth at the SCM, Sprenger won various A and B youth championship titles and was world champion in 2000. About the A-youth and the 2nd team, which at that time still played in the regional league, he finally got into the selection squad of the Bundesliga team . He played for them for the first time in 2002. Since the 2003/2004 season, parallel to his appearances in the SC Magdeburg Youngsters team in the 2nd handball league , he has been regularly used in the Bundesliga team of SC Magdeburg.
Sprenger narrowly missed winning the EHF Cup with SC Magdeburg in 2006 after a seemingly secure 8-goal lead, only to do better in the following season. In the 2006/2007 season, however, they prevailed against the CAI Aragón from Saragossa / Spain and thus secured the cup for the third time after 1999 and 2001.
Two protracted ankle and tendon injuries, which had their origin in the Bundesliga game against TBV Lemgo on March 28, 2006, which required two operations, also prevented further appearances in the national team jersey. It was not until the 2006/2007 season that he returned to the SCM squad on September 10, 2006, after a six-month injury break in the game against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen .
At the end of the 2008/2009 season, Sprenger left SC Magdeburg and moved to THW Kiel . The club received a transfer fee of € 250,000 because Sprenger still had a valid contract until 2010. With THW Kiel, Christian Sprenger won the German championship in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, the Champions League in 2010 and 2012, the DHB Cup in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017 , and the DHB Supercup in 2011, 2012 and 2014 as well 2011 the Super Globe . After the 2016/17 season, he ended his career and stayed as a youth coordinator at THW Kiel. Furthermore, Sprenger was planned as an assistant coach at TSV Altenholz , but in summer 2017 he took over the coaching office of the U23 team and the assistant coaching office of the Bundesliga team of the THW Kiel. After a year break, he has been assistant coach under Filip Jícha again since 2019 .
National team
In the dress of the national team he appeared 86 times and threw 185 goals. He made his international debut on January 4, 2002 against Switzerland in Balingen . He was a participant in the EM 2006 , in which the German national team took 5th place. He was also nominated for the 2007 World Cup ; Due to the lack of training due to several torn ligaments, he could not be taken into account and was replaced by Stefan Schröder . At the 2009 World Cup in Croatia , he and Stefan Schröder were the first choice on the right winger. He injured himself so badly in the first round match against Russia that he had to leave early.
At the 2010 European Championship in Austria , he was placed on the right winger as No. 1 ahead of Stefan Schröder , the latter having to be replaced after the first game, injured. The position of Stefan Schröder was then taken by Christian Schöne , who also replaced Sprenger at the 2009 World Cup when he was injured in the opening game and Stefan Schröder had to drop out due to the flu. The DHB selection took 10th place in the end.
At the 2012 European Championships , when Germany finished seventh, he was voted the best right winger in the All-Star team . On March 19, 2012, he announced his resignation from the national team due to excessive club charges and the missed Olympic qualification.
