Church of the Province of Rwanda
The Church of the Province of Rwanda is a member church of the Anglican Communion . It also calls itself L'Eglise Episcopal au Rwanda , the Episcopal Church of Rwanda . In 1992 the Church of the Province of Burundi gained independence from the Rwandan Church. Today it unites around 180,000 believers. They are spread over eleven dioceses (Butare, Byumba, Cyangugu, Gahini, Kibungo, Kigali , Kigeme, Shyira, Shyogwe), at the head of which the Archbishop of Rwanda has been the primate since 1980 .
The church is a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC).
The Church of Rwanda received its first local bishop as early as 1965 and at that time was still forming a common ecclesiastical province with Uganda , from which it split off in May 1980. The dioceses of the province comprise an average of 40 parishes.
