Anglican Communion Primates' Meeting
The Anglican Communion Primates' Meeting (dt. Meeting of the primates of the Anglican community ) is a meeting of the Anglican primates , that is, the highest archbishops and bishops of each Anglican province (national or regional church) , which takes place every two to three years . There are currently 38 primates. The meeting is chaired by the Archbishop of Canterbury ; the Secretary General of the Anglican Community serves as the secretary. The Primates' Meeting was first held in 1978 by then Archbishop of Canterbury, Donald Coggan convened as an opportunity for "free reflection, prayer, and in-depth deliberation" and took place in 1979.
Important meetings
February 2001
This meeting was held at the Kanuga Conference Center in the USA. Topics were mission , poverty and indebtedness , canon law and church fellowship , as well as an answer to the global crisis related to HIV / AIDS .
October 2003
After the regular Primates' meeting in May 2003, Archbishop Rowan Williams convened an extraordinary meeting at Lambeth Palace to hold a series of closed sessions. There the primates discussed the future course of the Anglican communion after the ordination of a homosexual bishop in the Episcopal Church of the United States . At the end of the meeting there was a final declaration.
February 2005
In February 2005, the Anglican Communion Primates' Meeting was held at Dromantine in Northern Ireland . The issue of homosexuality was hotly debated. 35 of the 38 primates were present. Also on the occasion of this meeting, the Primates published a final declaration in which most of the statements of the Windsor Report were confirmed, but new aspects were also included: The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada were asked to voluntarily withdraw from the Anglican Consultative Council until the next Lambeth -Conference to withdraw in 2008.
February 2007
The 2007 Primates' Meeting took place February 15-19 , 2007 in Dar es Salaam , Tanzania . There a draft for a "covenant" (document of a basic consensus) for the Anglican Communion was worked out, which was partly intended as a response to disagreements among member churches on issues such as sexuality and authority.
