Vinkovci [ ˈʋiːŋkɔːʋt͡si ] ( Hungarian Vinkovce , Latin Cibalae , German Winkowitz ) is a city in eastern Croatia (35,312 inhabitants, 2011) not far from the border with Serbia . The Croatians make up the majority of the population with 92.35 percent. Serbs represent the largest group (7 percent) among the minorities .

Vinkovci is a district town and lies in the Vukovar-Syrmia County ( Županija ) in an ancient settlement area. The cityscape is shaped by baroque architecture. Vinkovci is an important traffic and, above all, railway junction , but its marshalling yard has already been closed. The city is also called the "Gate of Croatia".

Industry

The most important branches of industry are the building materials industry (brickworks, gravel / concrete works) and the food industry. The city also has a developed timber industry that has survived despite the war. After the war the textile industry developed strongly.

history

Vinkovci was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period (7000 years ago). During the Bronze Age , an independent culture, the so-called Sopot culture, developed. Later, mainly Illyrian tribes settled here , which were then ousted by the Celts . After the conquest of Pannonia by the Romans , the Roman settlement of Cibalae arose here , which has been a municipality since the time of Hadrian and the Colonia Aurelia Cibalae since the 3rd century AD . The city, which was protected by a surrounding wall and stretched over an area of about 860 × 650 m, was also an important road junction. Constantine the Great won a victory over Licinius in the battle of Cibalae on October 8, 314 . In the 4th century the city even produced two Roman emperors: Valentinian I and Valens . An important archaeological find is the late antique treasure of Vinkovci, which was recovered in 2012 . With the fall of the Roman Empire , Cibalae also went under. In 378 the Visigoths destroyed the city. The Huns , Gepids , Ostrogoths and Avars caused further destruction .

Around 800 the Slavic Croats settled around the ruins of the city . They founded the village of Sv. Ilija next to the ruins of Cibalaes, which has been mentioned in Hungarian chronicles since the 11th century. After the destruction by the Mongol storm in 1242, the village was first mentioned under the Croatian name Vinko or Vinkovci. In 1527 the settlement was conquered and destroyed by the Ottomans.

After the Ottomans were expelled by the Habsburgs in 1699 , the inhabitants of the surrounding villages were relocated to Vinkovci. As a result, the village developed into a city again. During the period of the Habsburg Monarchy , different population groups were settled in the city and its surrounding area, but mainly Croats. The convenient location also benefited the city's development in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy .

The historic city center lies within the wall of the Roman settlement of Colonia Aurelia Cibalae . In the third century the city was the seat of an early Christian diocese . The two local saints, St. Eusebius and St. Polion, belong to this period.

Later a medieval settlement called Sveti Ilija (St. Elias) was located here, but it has had its current name since the end of the Middle Ages. During the Habsburg monarchy, the city became a military center and got its baroque appearance.

During the turbulent times of the 20th century, the city changed hands several times. It suffered the last and greatest destruction during the Croatian Homeland War in 1990/91, when Vinkovci became a central theater of war and was bombed by the Yugoslav army . More than half of the city was destroyed and many people had to flee.

Circle of friends and town twinning

When Vinkovci and Croatia needed help, citizens of the city of Kenzingen and the German Red Cross, Emmendingen district association , helped . They decided to bring children from Vinkovci to Kenzingen so that they would not have to see the war. Through this humanitarian effort a friendship developed not only between the children and their host families, but also between the towns of Vinkovci and Kenzingen. On May 2, 2002 a delegation from Kenzingen traveled to Vinkovci to agree on a town twinning. It was decided to extend the cooperation to politics, culture, economy and sport. There were other joint projects, donations and a student exchange. On July 8, 2007 the document establishing the town twinning was signed by Mayor Mladen Karlić and Mayor Matthias Guderjan.

Culture

In addition to the strip and comic exhibition, there is also an annual folk festival in the city. “ Vinkovačke jeseni ” is an autumn festival where the culture and customs of Croatia are exhibited.

Every year in May the symposium "Actor Festival" takes place.
