Cinemas in Munster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cinematic landscape of Münster includes a multiplex cinema and two cinemas . It is dominated by the Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe GmbH.

There is also the open-air cinema in front of the Münster castle in summer .

According to the manager of the Münsterschen Filmtheater-Betriebe, Ansgar Esch, there is a large target group for sophisticated films in Münster. This means that the audience structure in Münster is similar to that of the cinema goers from Paderborn .

Cineplex

Cineplex in Münster (2005)

The Cineplex in Münster on Albersloher Weg in the Hansaviertel was opened on November 15, 2000 and belongs to the Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe GmbH and is a member of the nationwide Cineplex cinema group . After the company was founded, the headquarters of the cinema group was located in the Cineplex Münster for several years before it was relocated to Wuppertal in 2008 . At the same time, with 2,707 seats and nine screens, it is one of the group's largest cinemas in Germany. According to the company management, the Cineplex in Münster is the group's most successful cinema. It is the first multiplex cinema in Münster. At the same time as the opening, two other cinemas in Münster were closed, the Apollo Theater and the Fürstenhof cinema center with two cinemas, in which, on January 11, 1963, a Winnetou film was shown for the first time in Münster with Der Schatz im Silbersee . In the period that followed, three more cinema centers, the Roland (four halls), the Metropolis (two halls) and the City of New York closed. Thus, the cinema life of Münster has completely withdrawn from the city center and the train station area and is now mostly in the industrial area around the port and the municipal utilities .

The Cineplex offers space for 2,707 visitors in nine halls. Most of the new releases start in the Cineplex, which is also the most modern cinema in Münster. In terms of visitor numbers, the Cineplex ranks among the top 10 most popular cinemas in Germany. One reason for this is that Münster, with over 50,000 students, has a very large cinema audience.

In addition, the Cineplex offers opportunities to receive guests of honor such as actors, directors or producers who can present their films there, as well as a discussion platform with the guests.

Moviepilot awarded the Cineplex in 2008 and 2009 with the title Favorite Cinema .

Since the end of 2007 there has been a digital video projector in Münster that can display up to 4096 pixels according to the 4K standard . This was made available by Sony for a one-year trial run, making the Cineplex Münster the first cinema in German-speaking Europe to regularly show films on such a projector. An opera broadcast from the MET in New York was also possible thanks to the projector and was gratefully accepted by the Münster audience. However, the test phase ended in mid-2008 and the projector was returned to Sony.

Just in time for the theatrical release of the 3D film Ice Age 3 in summer 2009, three-dimensional cinema also started in Münster's Cineplex . With the latest high-professional generation, the first 3D digital double projection in NRW and an optimally light-reflecting silver screen, the cinema once again set standards. In January 2013, films were shown in 3D in four of the nine cinemas. With The Hobbit , a film was shown for the first time in December 2012 with 48 instead of 24 frames per second.

Castle theater

The Castle Theater in the Kreuzviertel (2006)

The "Schloßtheater" on Melchersstrasse / Kanonierplatz in Kreuzviertel , built in 1953 and also belonging to Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe GmbH, is one of the oldest cinemas of the "Guild of German Film Art". The building is a listed building. In addition, the first German film club is located in the castle theater.

Originally, the cinema consisted of just one large hall that could seat 600 people. A few years later, the large hall was divided into three smaller halls. This should guarantee the demands on modern cinemas. The renovation in 1995, which should be based on the theater buildings of the 1920s, was honored by the Filmstiftung NRW as a “successful combination of film and building history”. Since this renovation, the palace theater has consisted of three cinema halls with a total of 441 seats.

Thematically, the main focus of the cinema is on the art house cinema, in the framework of which European films are shown. The Schloßtheater is also the venue for numerous special events, including the Münster Film Festival, which takes place every two years until 2003 . In 2012, the palace theater received funding of 8,000 euros from the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation . For the annual film program 2012 and the "children and youth film program" the castle theater 2013 was awarded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. As part of the 23rd NRW cinema award ceremony in Cologne's Gloria Theater in 2013, the Schloßtheater received a film award of 8,000 euros from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW for the cinema program and a further 4,000 euros for the children's and youth program.

The most successful film, which was shown in the castle theater in 2012, was The God of Carnage , whose screenings were attended by around 10,000 viewers. To Rome With Love was watched by 7,500 viewers that same year. In 2013, Life is not for cowards was the most-attended film in the castle theater, with 13,676 viewers at the box office. The film thus reached number 14 in the annual hit list in Münster, while it was ranked 97th nationwide with 273,975 viewers. In the next-placed cinema, only half of the viewers were counted for this film. Second place was taken in 2013 with the night train to Lisbon with almost 12,000 visitors, as was a literary film adaptation. Third place went to his last race with around 8,500 spectators. German films such as His last race , which reached 26th place in Münster and 86th place nationwide, and Hannah Arendt , who landed 29th in Münster and 72nd nationwide , were equally convincing .

Cinema and crank case

The Cinema (2006)

The "Cinema" founded in 1968 on Warendorfer Strasse is an integral part of Münster's cultural landscape. In its early days, it was located on Weseler Straße , and was planned as a art house cinema and was used accordingly. However, this requirement has changed over time. So the main focus is now on the "socially, politically, artistically and historically relevant film" . It has already received a number of prizes and awards for this, including the award for the nationwide best annual film program 2000 or the cinema program award 2002 and 2013 as well as 2004 for an outstanding annual film program. For its outstanding program, Cinema 2012 received the maximum funding of 12,000 euros from the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation . Since around the turn of the millennium, the cinema has received the main prize from the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation every year. Bernd Neumann, the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media, awarded the Cinema an award for the 2012 annual film program, the “Children and Youth Film Program”, the short film and the documentary program. This makes the cinema one of the five most award-winning film theaters among the 1,600 German cinemas. Together with the Bonn cinema in the Brotfabrik, the cinema received the highest film award from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW for an "exemplary program" at the 23rd NRW cinema awards ceremony in Cologne's Gloria Theater in 2013. The prize was endowed with 14,000 euros, followed by a further prize of 2,000 euros for the children's and youth program.

The citizens of Münster saved the cinema from the threat of closure through a financial solidarity campaign. It was completely renovated in 2004. The rows of seats were given wider armchairs and a larger row spacing, the toilets were replaced and the windows of the cinema café can be opened two-thirds since then. The three halls are equipped with 158, 58 and 52 seats respectively, the two smaller ones also offer two wheelchair spaces each. All halls are equipped with a hearing impaired system that works via an infrared transmitter as well as an induction loop.

In addition, all halls have a digital projection system, which means that films can be shown not only from film reels, but also from delivered hard drives using a video projector. A Panasonic projector and a DCS server, which is also connected to the projector in Cinema 2, are installed in the large hall. A ROPA server and a Christie projector work in the crank case. After initial, sometimes considerable problems, the initial problems of digital technology increasingly seem to be a thing of the past. The quality of the digitally projected films depends above all on the data material supplied, some of which differ greatly in terms of resolution.

Cinema 1 is also equipped with a stage.

Connected to the cinema is a restaurant that uses as many fair-trade products and ecological goods as possible for food and drinks. In addition to German, the menu is also available in English, Dutch and Braille .

The Cinema is home to Die Linse , the association for the promotion of local film work. The cinema is also used for screenings at film festivals. In December 2013, the English language school film festival “Britfilms” organized by AG Kino-Gilde e. V., which, as the third largest school film festival in Germany, made stops in 60 cities, took place in the cinema and the castle theater .

Marteria in the cinema: "World tour with Marteria" (2014)

In addition, the art house cinema is regularly visited by prominent actors and filmmakers and used for other film-related events. So put Marteria on 28 January 2014 Cinema at an event from 1 Live Photos and stories of a three-week intercontinental journey entitled "World Tour with Marteria" which he and photographer Paul Ripke u. a. from Europe to South America and Alaska to Asia.

2012 was the most successful year for cinema since 2002. With 75,000 moviegoers, the number of viewers increased by five percent compared to the previous year. The documentary Berg Fidel - A School for Everyone was the most successful film that Cinema showed in 2012, with 6,000 visitors, followed by Oh Boy and Die Wand . Oh Boy continued his success in 2013, when he took the top spot in the Cinema annual ranking with 8,000 viewers. The other places in 2013 went to The Taste of Rust and Bones with around 5,000 visitors, the film Das Mädchen Wadjda , which was attended by around 4,000 viewers, and the film Inside Llewyn Davis, which only opened at the end of the year .

After the “ Pay-What-You-Want ” concept had been successfully applied in both the Münster Allwetterzoo and the Münster Friedenssaal at the beginning of 2013 , the operators of the cinema decided to take up this concept based on the example of a Freiburg arthouse cinema. In 2013 [obsolete] the digital projection technology in all cinemas is to be further improved.

Open-air cinema Münster

Summer Open Air in Münster with an inflatable screen (2008)

The open-air cinema in Münster already has a long tradition. In 1998 the first open-air cinema took place in the Stapelskotten outdoor pool. After a successful premiere, the inflatable screen moved to Schloßplatz the following year. The event is still very popular today. The sneak preview, which was very successful in Münster, was also shown in the open air in 2009. The film Maria, he doesn't like it! attracted almost 2,000 spectators. On July 28, 2011 the premiere of the Münster crime scene was celebrated for the first time in the open air in front of the castle. In 2011 there was space for up to 3,000 viewers in front of the screen, on which 3D films , including Avatar - Departure for Pandora and Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides , were shown for the first time.

In the summer of 2013, a 16-meter inflatable screen was inflated every evening for the demonstrations, a digital projector was used again, and 2,500 chairs and another 150 deck chairs were made available to the audience. The open-air cinema achieved the best average number of visitors to date in the period from August 13, 2013 to August 21, 2013, when almost 9,000 moviegoers visited the open-air cinema on Schlossplatz. A total of more than 16,000 spectators attended the 16 performances in 2013. More than 1,000 visitors were counted on eight of the 16 cinema evenings. The most successful performance was the sneak preview, which was attended by more than 2,200 spectators.

Former cinemas in Münster

City of New York

The Former City of New York (2006)

The "City of New York", which formerly belonged to Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe GmbH and is located directly at the intersection of Salzstrasse and Promenade , was the largest of the long-established cinemas in Münster until the Metropolis, Apollo and Roland theaters were closed.

The name goes back to the "Hotel Stadt New York" formerly located at this point. It was founded in 1907. After a few years the name changed to "Schauburg" before it was renamed "City of New York" again in 1989. With 844 seats in four halls, it was recently used to take over films from the large halls of the Cineplex or to show them in parallel, for example as the original version, or to show sophisticated films outside the mainstream. There have been seldom restarts of films recently, these are mostly reserved for the Cineplex. In 2005 it was also the venue for the Münster Film Festival .

Since the lease of the Münster film theater companies for the inner-city building expired and this was sold to a housing association that did not extend the lease, the "City of New York" was closed after the last performance on August 8, 2007.

Rex at the train station, later Metropolis

The Rex and later the Metropolis were located directly next to the main train station in Münster, Berliner Platz 38. They were on the site of the former hotel “Der Reichshof”. After the reconstruction, the building was used as a cinema in the late 1950s.

After the takeover by the operator Heiner Pier, who also runs the cinema , and the renovation, the cinema was renamed "Metropolis". Until then, the cinema operated under the name "Rex am Bahnhof". A demanding cinema program was then shown in the Metropolis from 1989 to 2004.

For the skulptur projekte münster 07 , Clemens von Wedemeyer's former Metropolis was used as a cinema for the screening of his film Von Gegenüber . The facade of the cinema building reminded the artist of Dan Graham's architectural model "Cinema" . The building is twelve meters high.

In March 2008 the Metropolis reopened as a music club. This was to be followed by the Tempelhaus Club from 2011, but this failed due to legal obstacles. The architects Andreas Deilmann and Rainer M. Kresing acquired the property from an insolvency estate. There are now plans to build a student residence on the site. Furthermore, the construction of a 15-storey residential and commercial building with a height of 45 meters is being planned on the property, after a building with a height of 60 meters was rejected by the politicians. According to the city planning office, no high-rise buildings may be built on the property according to building regulations, but a project-related development plan could be adopted. After the urban development concept was presented at a public hearing in March 2013, the architects submitted the draft for the project-related development plan no.558 from December 30, 2013 to January 30, 2014 for public inspection in town house 3. But even the planned 45-meter-high building meets with criticism from the people of Münster, as it would block the cathedral city's characteristic tower silhouette due to its proximity to the old town. In addition, there was criticism from the population who reject a boarding house near the train station. The real estate and location community Bahnhofsviertel expressed concerns of its members that the quarter could become a red light district in the course of the next decade if 156 barrier-free one-room apartments with a size of 25 to 28 square meters for single households in the 3rd to 13th floors the planned high-rise should arise after the originally planned cooperation with the student union no longer comes about. Architect Andreas Deilmann pointed out that a continuously manned reception should be housed in the apartment building, which is why a red light milieu could not establish itself in the building. At the beginning of April 2013, the majority of the members of the ISG stated that they did not agree with the plans. The building is supported by the CDU and FDP . The SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen reject the construction project. A restaurant, a bakery and a wash bar will be located on the ground floor, while office and common rooms will be created on the floor above. The building complex is to consist of two structures that are connected by a glass joint. After there was no cooperation with the Studentenwerk, some one-room apartments were rescheduled into two-room apartments, which should result in between 120 and 130 apartments.
