action

scenario

Map of the world by Code Geass after the invasion of Japan.
Holy British Empire
Euro Universe (EU)
Chinese Federation

In an alternate reality of 2010 atb (1955 AD), the Holy British Empire ( 神聖 ブ リ タ ニ ア帝国 , Shinsei Buritania Teikoku ) conquered Japan in less than a month, which now, stripped of its name, exists as Area 11 . Its inhabitants are henceforth called Elevens and are considered to be third class residents, alongside Britannians and the " Honorary Britannians " who work for the Britons . In 2017 atb, smaller resistance cells and the Japanese Liberation Front ( 日本 解放 戦 線 , nippon kaihō sensen ) fight against the British occupation forces.

The dominant type of weapon are the Knightmare Frames ( Japanese ナ イ ト メ ア フ レ レ, ム ), large manned Mech combat robots whose energy source is the rare Sakuradite ( Japanese サ ク ラ ダ イ ト ) mineral , whose main deposits are in Japan. Their advanced drive system is based on Sakuradit, also called Yggdrasil -Drive . Sakuradit was the main reason for the invasion of Britannic Empire of Japan, since it at room temperature functioning superconductor can be produced.

After Lelouch Lamperouge's father, actually Lelouch vi Britannia and 17th heir to the throne of the British Empire, the British Emperor Charles zi Britannia , did nothing to solve the murder of his mother, Empress Marianne vi Britannia , and Lelouch as well as his blind after the murder of their mother and sent paralyzed sister Nunnally hostage to Japan, Lelouch vowed to destroy the British Empire. He and his sister find shelter on the Ashford Academy premises under the protection of the respected Ashford family and take the surname of their dead mother. In 2017 he met the mysterious girl CC , who gave him the Geass, called The Power of the King ( Japanese 王 の 力 , Ō no Chikara ). With its power he can impose his will on any person. Lelouch wants to create a world in which weaker members of society, especially his sister Nunnally, can live without danger and avenge the death of his mother. This worldview is in contrast to that of the British emperor, who relies on the right of the strongest.

The fictional universe of Code Geass is dominated by three power blocks: The Holy British Empire , the Euro Universe or EU ( Japanese ユ ー ロ ・ ユ ニ バ ー ス , Yūro Yunibāsu ) and the Chinese Federation ( Japanese 中 華連邦 , Chūka Renpō ). The British Empire spans America , Greenland , Japan (Area 11), the Indochinese Peninsula (Area 10), New Zealand and parts of the Middle East (Area 18).

In the manga itself, reference is made to the historical development, in the anime this hardly occurs. The British monarchy has its roots in the Celtic king Eowyn , who 55 BC. BC united the British tribes and threw back the Roman invasion under Julius Caesar . The British Empire now exists as an absolute monarchy on the British Isles. It has its golden age under King Henry IX. arising from a relationship between Elizabeth I and an English nobleman. Jacob VI of Scotland remains only King of Scotland.

Britannia bribes in 1825 atb Benjamin Franklin , who thereupon Louis XVI. asked by France for military support in the war of independence . As a result, the US troops lose the Battle of Yorktown , George Washington dies and the independence movement comes to an end. However, after a few revolutions in mainland Europe, the rising Napoleon Bonaparte wins the Battle of Trafalgar and forces the British Empress Elizabeth III. to escape to Edinburgh . There she abdicates at first, but is then brought to North America by her lover Ricardo von Britannia and a friend and builds a new capital on the northeast coast of North America.

The EU controls continental Europe, Africa with Madagascar, the British Isles and Northern Siberia. The Chinese Federation includes China, South Siberia, Mongolia, India and most of Southeast Asia.

season 1

During a joyride with his school friend Rivalz , Lelouch, who goes to Ashford Academy under a false name, is involuntarily drawn into a skirmish between Japanese resistance fighters and British occupation forces. He meets his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi again, the son of the last Japanese Prime Minister, who is now working as a foot soldier for Britain. He freed CC from an experimental facility, which gave him the Geass shortly before they were shot by a British troop of soldiers . He realizes that as the bearer of his Geass he is the only one who can change the world, destroy the British Empire and create a friendly environment and protection for his blind, paralyzed sister Nunnally . After ordering the soldiers to commit suicide, he procures a Knightmare and takes command of the Japanese fighters. He puts on a disguise and the code name Zero and founds the Order of the Black Knights. This forces the commander and governor general of Japan and 4th heir to the throne of the British Empire, Clovis la Britannia, to fall back on the new Knightmare unit Lancelot. However, Lelouch manages to gain access to Clovis' command center and kills him after trying to find out his mother's murderer unsuccessfully using the Geass.

Meanwhile, Suzaku prevents the Japanese rebels from winning as the Lancelot pilot, but is then blamed as a scapegoat for the death of Clovis. Shortly before his execution, he is freed by Lelouch, who coordinates the resistance. Suzaku, however, refuses to work with him, as he believes that change must come from within, not by force. The consequence of this disagreement is a life and death war.

season 2

A year after Zero's defeat moved into the country, he lives fed with false memories together with Rolo , an assassin who has a Geass that can stop the subjective sense of time and who took Nunnally's place with the help of false memories, Shirley, Millay, Rivalz and the others a peaceful student life. While gambling, he also comes to the Babel Tower, where he falls into the clutches of the surviving Black Knights , led by Kallen , his elite fighter, Urabe, the last remnant of the Japan Liberation Front and CC . CC awakens his former self, gives him back his memories and his Geass, which his father once sealed. However, he has to go on his fake life as Nunnally is being held hostage by his father, and he further allies himself with Rolo and makes him believe that as brothers they have a future as free people, even though he only uses him as a tool. As time goes on, "Zero" succeeds in banishing itself and its followers from Japan, starting a war with the Chinese leading powers, starting a revolution and establishing the United Federation of Nations which declares war on the Holy British Empire.

The turning point comes when Lelouch believes that he has lost his sister while the FLEJA warhead was deployed and, at the same time, Prince Schneitzel reveals Zero's real identity and Geass to the Black Knights. Rolo sacrifices himself to enable Lelouch to escape, and Lelouch teams up with the disaffected Suzaku to seize power in the British Empire. Since they succeed in doing this, Lelouch himself now stands on the seat of the ruler of the great power that he actually wanted to destroy, and plans the destruction of the Black Knights, to which Schneitzel and the living Nunnally now belong. Schneizel destroys the capital of Britannia Pendragon with a reinforced FLEJA warhead. With his new Knightmare, Suzaku destroys the Lancelot Albion for Knight of One Bismarck Waldenstein and the remaining Knights of the Round. It comes to the final battle in Japan between Britannia and the Black Knights.

Lelouch wins the battle by gaining control of Damocles, who is capable of firing Fleja warheads en masse across the world.

Lelouch is now the absolute ruler of the world, there is only one small resistance cell. In order to secure peace forever, Lelouch has drawn hatred from the whole world through his actions and lets his friend Suzaku publicly kill him in the disguise of Zero.

characters

Lelouch Lamperouge in his role as Zero
Lelouch Lamperouge ( ル ル ー シ ュ ・ ラ ン ペ ル ー ジ , Rurūshu Ranperūji )
Lelouch is the son of the 98th British Emperor Charles zi Britannia and the Empress Marianne. After the death of his mother, he and his sister Nunnally were sold to Japan. It was there that he first met Suzaku, who over time became his best friend. When Japan was finally occupied by Britain and renamed Area 11, he vowed to overthrow his father and create a peaceful world for Nunnally. Officially, he died with his sister in the invasion of Britain, but he is protected by the Ashford family, who already supported his mother Marianne.
CC
CC is one of the two immortals who walked the earth in Lelouch's time. She is also the former leader of the Geass cult, but left it because she did not agree with VV's views. Lelouch is also supported by her in many situations, as she says they are accomplices and it would be a problem for them if Lelouch were dead, as he could then no longer fulfill their contract. This contract says that Lelouch should fulfill her greatest wish, which is to save her from her life. One can guess that it is the same wish as the nun who formerly gave CC a geass and died at CC's hand. In addition, over time, she developed feelings for Lelouch and supported him until the end.

The students

The students of Ashford Academy, located in Area 11. Only honored British and others are allowed to enter and study there. The only exception is Kururugi Suzaku, Lelouch's best friend, who also joined Ashford Academy to oversee him.

Milly Ashford ( ミ レ イ ・ ア ッ シ ュ フ ォ ー ド , Mirei Asshufōdo )
President of the Academy's Student Council. Hides behind her name when problems arise as her father is a big deal in politics. She tries every opportunity to match Lelouch and is engaged to Count Lloyd, the British military development officer. In the course of the series this connection dissolves, she leaves school and works as a weather announcer for television.
Shirley Fenette ( シ ャ ー リ ー ・ フ ェ ネ ッ ト , Shārī Fenetto )
Has long been in love with Lelouch. When she found out that he was Zero and that she was responsible for the death of her father, she tried to kill him, influenced by Mao. But he managed to verbally overwhelm her and by means of the Geass to make her forget the fact that he is Zero and his own existence. But she was reminded of this order a year later. She wants to support Lelouch and meets Rolo, who kills her after mentioning Lelouch's sister Nunnally.
Nina Einstein ( ニ ー ナ ・ ア イ ン シ ュ タ イ ン , Nīna Ainshutain )
A brilliant, shy student. Princess Euphemia saved her, after which she admired the princess and imagined that they had created a mutual bond. When she then gave the order to massacre everyone who called themselves Japanese, she was shocked. Zero killed her when she was in a blood frenzy. Since then, Nina has pursued Zero to avenge her princess and restore her name. Later she worked as a scientist on the side of the British and developed a uranium-based bomb called FLEJA for them. This destroyed most of Tokyo first, killing around 25 million people. She later developed a defense against the FLEJA for Lelouch.
Suzaku Kururugi ( ス ザ ク 枢 木 , Suzaku Kururugi )
As a child he murdered his father, the Prime Minister of Japan, in the middle of the War of Independence and gave the order to surrender in his place. This act made his egoism, which Lelouch always associated with him, shrink considerably. Hence his opinion on change comes from within. By chance he met Princess Euphemia and fell in love with her. When their joint plan with the Japanese Special Administrative Region ended with Euphemia's bloodlust and her associated death, he changed his plan. His final goals were to become the Knight of One , the most powerful knight in the British Empire and to avenge Euphemia's death.

The black knights

The Army of Zero, Lelouch's alter ego. At first she was only seven men strong, but many factions and individual important characters joined her. The exact final number is unknown, especially due to the connection of the millions of helpers who went into exile with Zero. Through many supporters, such as the Kyoto Group, the Chinese Federation and India, and later the Supranational Federation, the Black Knights receive a variety of excellent Knightmare models. Combined with pilots like Kallen Kouzuki and Kyoushiro Todo and Lelouch as leaders, makes them a dangerous threat to the Holy British Empire.

Kallen Kōzuki ( 紅月 カ レ ン , Kōzuki Karen ) / Kallen Stadtfeld ( カ レ ン ・ シ ュ タ ッ ト フ ェ ル ト , Karen Shutattoferuto )
Appeared in the first episode. She was a member of the resistance group and the driver of the truck that CC was in. Like Suzaku's unit, she assumed that the contents of the container were poison gas that could be used to blackmail the regional government. She was later named his personal bodyguard by Zero. Kallen admired Zero very much as he gave her and the rest of the Japanese hope to end British rule. She lost her big brother early and hated her mother for still chasing after her aristocratic parent. However, she later realized that she had stayed only because of her. To create a second identity at Ashford Academy, she used the surname of her sire, Herzog Stadtfeld. She suspected early on that Lelouch was Zero, but it wasn't until "Zero" that she found out the shocking truth. She is an absolute flying ace. Her Knightmare is the Guren-MK II. Lelouch recognizes her talent very early on and contacts her anonymously. Zero calls her with the code name Q-1. "Q" for Queen, his best character.
Diethard Ried ( デ ィ ー ト ハ ル ト ・ リ ー ト , Dītoharuto Rīto )
Originally a British journalist who got a high rank on a television station in Area 11. He was the one who used his broadcaster to film the liberation operation of Kururugi Suzaku, who was accused of killing Prince Clovis. Carried away by the vision of a hero who works miracles, he joined the Order of the Black Knights and got the post of news manipulation officer. But this vision repeatedly led him to act on his own initiative. In the second season he takes Prince Schneizel's side.
Kyoshiro Toudou

Is a former lieutenant colonel in the military. After the outbreak of war he won a battle against Britannia, which earned him the name "The Miracle of Itsukushima". He is recruited by Zero after the Japanese Liberation Front is destroyed. He plays a leading role in the 1st and 2nd Black Rebellions. After Zero's disappearance in the attack on the extra-territorial area of Tokyo, he takes command of the armed forces. Kyousiro Toudou is captured with the other black knights. He's a very skilled Knightmare pilot. He is the leader of the Four Holy Swords , one of the best groups of pilots in Japan.

Rakshata

Engineer and developer. Rakshata is the chief developer of the Black Knights and takes care of the maintenance and ongoing development of the Knightmares. She comes from the former Republic of India. With her team she created the Guren-MK II and the Shen Huo. The development of the Shinkirous can very probably also be attributed to her.

The British nobility

Since Lelouch is (was) also a son of Charles zi Britannia, the following are his family.

Marianne vi Britannia ( マ リ ア ン ヌ ・ ヴ ィ ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Mariannu vi Buritania )
Lelouche's mother, who was killed in an assassination attempt. Lelouch tries to find out who killed her for what reason and why his father did nothing to solve the murder. In the end, her spirit was able to survive through a geass in another person, but this will only be known later. She is the great love of Charles and his allies in the fight against the world.
Schneizel el Britannia ( シ ュ ナ イ ゼ ル ・ エ ル ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Shunaizeru eru Buritania )
After Charles Lelouchs' greatest enemy, especially in the second season of the series. A very clever and cunning opponent who has not yet lost a game of chess against Lelouch. Replaces Charles zi Britannia, the emperor, after his disappearance. When Charles describes the war over Japan as unimportant, it starts a coup, which eventually culminates in the use of Damocles. He also knew about Geass as well as Zero's true identity. He cleverly used this information to manipulate Zero's army into handing over his younger brother. At the end of the second season he is enslaved by Lelouch's Geass, whereupon he served Zero from now on.
Cornelia li Britannia ( コ ー ネ リ ア ・ リ ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Kōneria ri Buritania )
The second princess of Britannia and Lelouch's half-sister. She is a gifted Knightmare pilot and she completely conquered Area 18 shortly before arriving in Area 11. In the first season, Cornelia has a far more important role than in the second. She is also an opponent of Zero in the first season, but rather neutral in the second, even if she sticks to her brother Schneizel.
Charles zi Britannia ( シ ャ ル ル ・ ジ ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Sharuru ji Buritania )
The 98th Emperor of the Holy British Empire and father of Lelouch. He is the twin brother of VV but, unlike VV, is not immortal in the first season. Only in the second season does he murder his twin brother in order to achieve his immortality. He is also Lelouch's real enemy, Lelouch's entire hatred is directed against him. His geass enables him to manipulate people's memories by looking them in the eye. He also applies this to Lelouch, which makes him forget his sister Nunnally and thinks Rolo is his brother. However, Charles loses the ability to manipulate memories when he receives VV's immortality.
Clovis la Britannia ( ク ロ ヴ ィ ス ・ ラ ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Kurovisu ra Buritania )
He is the third prince of the British Empire and Lelouch's older half-brother. His relationship with Lelouch's family before Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan were very good. He only made a brief appearance in the first episodes of the first season, as he becomes Lelouch's first victim and is shot during the first battle of Lelouch.
Euphemia li Britannia ( ユ ー フ ェ ミ ア ・ リ ・ ブ リ タ ニ ア , Yūfemia ri Buritania )
Euphemia is the third princess of the British Empire and Lelouch's half-sister. She selected Suzaku Kururugi as her knight and has a close, slightly romantic relationship with him too. She is one of the first to find out that Lelouch is still alive and the first to know that Lelouch is Zero. She planned to make Japan independent again when Lelouch loses control of his Geass and inadvertently gave her the order to kill all Japanese. Since she cannot defy this order she becomes a murder princess. She dies in the first season at Lelouch's hand.
VV ( ヴ イ ・ ツ ー , Vui Tsū )
A mysterious boy that nobody understands at first. He is the twin brother of Charles, but unlike Charles, VV is no longer aging, as he became immortal through a contract with a previous Geass owner. He gave their geass to Rolo, Charles and Jeremiah Gottwald. In the second season he is murdered by his brother Charles because he wants VVs "Code". Also out of revenge, because VV is Marianne's murderer.

Other figures

Mao ( マ オ )
He is an orphan raised by CC. He also got the geass from her to read minds. When he lost control of his geass, he also lost his mind over time, because from that moment on he constantly had to hear all the thoughts of the people around him. The only person whose mind he couldn't read was CC, which is why he was compulsively drawn to her. Although he could read minds, he was defeated by tactics by Lelouch. In the end, he is shot by CC to free him from his suffering.
