Constantin Schreiber (born June 14, 1979 in Cuxhaven ) is a German journalist and bestselling author. For moderating the German-Arab tv n- telecast Marhaba - arriving in Germany , he received the 2016 Grimme Prize awarded. He has been with ARD-aktuell since January 2017 , moderating issues of Tagesschau and Nachtmagazin and reporting as an ARD correspondent in Cairo .

Life and career as a journalist

Schreiber was born in Cuxhaven and grew up in Wilhelmshaven . As a teenager he spent a long time in Syria , where he learned the Arabic language . After graduating from high school , he did an internship in a trading office in Port Said .

Schreiber then studied law (1998–2002) and completed a journalistic traineeship (2004–2006) at Deutsche Welle . Thanks to a Reuters scholarship, he has meanwhile been able to study at Oxford University. In 2006 Schreiber worked as a reporter for the Lebanese daily newspaper Daily Star in Beirut . Among other things, he wrote reports on Hezbollah and accompanied international aid workers in the removal of landmines in southern Lebanon . Schreiber organizes photo exhibitions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 2009 he traveled with another photographer to Lake Chad in Central Africa and created images of the drying up natural paradise for the exhibition “Lake Chad - Living Space in Transition”. He also organizes for the international media alliance (IMA) e. V. international media events.

From 2007 to 2009 Schreiber was the correspondent for the Arab program of Deutsche Welle in Dubai . His reporting area included the Arabian Peninsula and northeast Africa. In 2007 he produced a report from northern Somalia . In the same year he documented a refugee disaster off the Comoros . In 2008 he reported from the Chadian-Sudanese border about the refugee drama there.

From 2009 to 2011 Schreiber worked as a media advisor for the Middle East in the Federal Foreign Office . He created internal guidelines for the use of social media such as Facebook or Twitter , initiated a number of German-Arab media projects and coordinated media projects in Germany during the Arab Spring. He accompanied numerous politicians on their Middle East trips, including Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel , EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso and the former Federal Foreign Minister and current Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier .

In 2010 his first book Ausverkauf Deutschland was published on the role of foreign investors in Germany. In 2015 he was the editor of the successful book 1000 Leitschenhiebe , for which he had compiled the deleted texts of the Saudi blogger Raif Badawi . The book has been translated into numerous languages ​​including English, French, Italian and Dutch.

Schreiber has been moderating the science program SciTech - Our World of Tomorrow , a counterpart to ProSieben magazine Galileo, in Arabic for the Egyptian broadcaster ONTV since 2011 . The station produces 24 issues per year, most of which are produced on the block. Schreiber is then in Egypt for two to three weeks. Around four million Egyptians tune into the program regularly. The show will also be broadcast on Oman TV and Qatar TV .

From 2012 to 2016 worked as a clerk television presenter for various TV channels: In Germany, he anchored news and live coverage on the subject Middle East and Middle East of the station n-tv . In 2016 he was awarded the Grimme Prize in the “Information and Culture / Special” category for moderating the German-Arabic program Marhaba - Arriving in Germany . In the multi-part series, Schreiber explains the Germans and local life in Arabic with German subtitles . Each of the programs is around five minutes long and provides information on topics such as the Basic Law , religious freedom or the role of women - but also very practical information about life in Germany such as German eating habits, leisure activities or Christmas carols.

In January 2017 Constantin Schreiber switched to ARD-aktuell , where he moderates the early and weekend editions of the Tagesschau , as well as the night magazine . Since March 2017 Schreiber moderated the NDR telecast Zapp - The Media magazine , succeeding Inka Schneider . In 2017 and 2018, Constantin Schreiber reported for several weeks as an ARD correspondent in Cairo .

Book publications

In 2017 his book Inside Islam - What is preached in Germany's mosques was published by Econ Verlag in Berlin and the moscheereport TV series on tagesschau24 . To research these two works, Schreiber visited almost 20 ordinary mosques in Germany with or without a camera team and translated their Friday sermons . In his book, Schreiber critically describes grievances in the Islamic communities. The book entered the Spiegel bestseller list at number 1.

In 2019 his book Children of the Koran was published. What Muslim students learn , for which he claims to have examined numerous textbooks from Afghanistan , Iran , Egypt , Palestine and Turkey . Schreiber accuses the textbooks of conveying gender stereotypes, excessive nationalism, political propaganda and religious intolerance to the students - sometimes also in hidden messages. On the one hand , the book and its analyzes were positively discussed by Rainer Herrmann , the FAZ's Middle East correspondent. On the other hand, due to numerous points of criticism, it was also commented extremely negatively in the online news magazine dis: orient . The reviewer accuses the author of, among other things, methodological weaknesses in the selection and translation of school books, inaccurate generalizations of the various Muslim societies in the countries of origin and in Europe, and, last but not least, an aid to argumentation for right-wing extremist discourses. - The book reached number 5 on the Spiegel bestseller list.
