Conteville (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks to Herleva , the wife of her ancestral father and mother of William the Conqueror , Conteville belongs to the inner circle around the Rollonids and thus one of the greatest winners of the Norman conquest of England .

Among the eleven nobles who, according to the Domesday Book 1086, owned half of England, the House of Conteville is represented twice with Robert von Mortain , Earl of Cornwall and Hugh d'Avranches , Earl of Chester .

Another important member of the family is the Bishop Odo of Bayeux , who is believed to have commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry .

The story of the Conteville family ends with the sinking of the White Ship off Barfleur on November 25, 1120.
