Cottondale is a city in Jackson County in the US state of Florida with 933 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Cottondale is about 10 km west of Marianna and about 120 km northwest of Tallahassee .

history

The railroad age in Cottondale began in 1883 with the construction of the Pensacola and Chattahoochee rail line by the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad . A second route was opened in 1908 by the Atlanta and St. Andrews Bay Railroad (ASAB) from Panama City via Cottondale to Dothan ( Alabama ), which made the city an important rail hub for freight traffic. The ASAB was in 1994 in the Bay Line Railroad .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 933 inhabitants were distributed over 426 households. The population density was 239.2 inh / km². 69.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 24.2% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.7% to several ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 35.4% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 30.0% of all households. 66.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.50 people and the average family size was 3.07 people.

31.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 48.2% of the population were male and 51.8% were female.

The median annual income was $ 19,926, with 48.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the native language of 96.32% of the population and Spanish spoke 3.68%.

Cottondale is crossed by US Highways 90 ( SR 10 ) and 231 ( SR 75 ). Rail freight traffic through Cottondale is operated by CSX and (between Dothan and Panama City) Bay Line Railroad . The nearest airport is Dothan Regional Airport (around 60 km north).
