Coupe de France 1965/66
The competition for the Coupe de France in the 1965/66 season was the 49th playout of the French football cup for men's teams. This year 1,172 clubs registered.
After the qualification rounds organized by the regional subdivisions of the regional association FFF , the first division clubs also intervened in the thirty-second finals . Defending champion was Stade Rennes , who were eliminated in the round of 16 this year. The winner of the competition was the Racing Club Strasbourg . This was Strasbourg's second win this trophy after 1951 . Final opponent FC Nantes , only promoted to Division 1 in 1963, took part in its first final; but the so-called "Canaris" because of their dress colors had become French champions in both 1965 and 1966 .
The most successful amateur team came from the fourth-rate club Stade Saint-Brieuc , which made it into the top 16 teams, where the later competition winner RC Strasbourg presented too high a hurdle. After all, three second division partners ( AC Ajaccio , AS Cherbourg and Stade Reims ) made it to the quarter-finals and on the way threw a top-tier eleven out of the race, Reims even played last year's winner Stade Rennes after two replays.
The cup pairings were drawn in the thirty-second finals based on a rough north-south division of the country, then freely for each round and basically took place on a neutral spot; the income was shared. If an encounter ended in a draw after extra time, replay games were played until a winner was determined.

Special occurrences
In the final, Nantes had to deal with the handicap of only nine full-fledged field players for almost an hour because Ramon Muller was only able to play the role of an extra near the sideline after an injury in the 31st minute.
Strasbourg's captain René Hauss, who accepted the trophy after the final whistle, was also in the Alsatian finals fifteen years earlier when they won their first cup.
National player Joseph Ujlaki , in his 19th year as a professional in France and now under contract with the second-class AS Aix, stated after his team's victory over US Valenciennes in the round of 32: “At no point did we have the impression that we were facing a first division; that shows me that French football is very sick. ”A few weeks after the final, his judgment was further confirmed when the Équipe tricolore at the World Cup in England was knocked out in the preliminary round.
