DC Extended Universe
DC Extended Universe ( DCEU ) is the unofficial name of a film franchise about the fictional universe of DC Comics , which are linked by basic plot elements and locations, the cast and the characters and whose first film was Man of Steel , which was released in 2013 is. The films represent a series of superhero films that have been independently produced by DC Entertainment until 2016, since then by the outsourced company DC Films and based on characters from DC Comics , but are independent of the comic universe.
So far (as of August 2020) eight films from the franchise have been released.
development
The first plans for a joint cinematic DC universe began in 1998 when Kevin Smith and Tim Burton tried to film Superman Lives . Nicolas Cage should have played Superman , who was supposed to be killed by Doomsday in this film . However, the plans were rejected.
Another attempt at the beginning of a common cinematic universe was made with the 2011 film Green Lantern . The authors Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim were already writing the script for a film about The Flash , which should also become part of the film universe. However, because the film received mostly negative reviews and the revenues were below expectations, Warner Bros. canceled the project.
After the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , Warner Bros. has resumed plans for a cinematic universe and made them a reality with Man of Steel .
Following the release of Batman v Superman , Warner announced an adjustment to his plans: Wonder Woman's launch date was moved forward three weeks from June 23, 2017, and two unknown films were announced for October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019. In December 2016 it was announced that the unknown film was to be the new release date for Aquaman for 2018 and had therefore been postponed by ten weeks. The start date for Aquaman was later postponed again to December 21, 2018. In November 2017, the original start date of the announced Wonder Woman sequel was moved forward from December 23, 2019 to the November start date.
Producers Jon Berg and Geoff Johns were in charge of the development of the DCEU until the end of 2017, and since then Walter Hamada and Chantal Nong .
In planning
Due to reluctant public relations work and many rumors, there have already been many misunderstandings and assumptions regarding allegedly established releases of films from the franchise universe, such as B. Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, Gotham City Sirens, Nightwing, Dark Universe or Batgirl .
The so far officially confirmed pending releases are: Wonder Woman 1984 , The Flash , The Suicide Squad , Black Adam , Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman 2 .

Crossover
In addition to the DC Extended Universe film franchise, DC Comics' TV series franchise, the Arrowverse , has existed since 2012 . Both DC adaptations initially have no influence on each other. Kevin Smith stated in January 2016 that there are, however, plans for potential crossovers between the Arrowverse and the DC Extended Universe . In the five-part Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths (2019-2020), which aired on The CW , Ezra Miller's version of The Flash from the DC Extended Universe finally appeared .
Trivia
The name "DC Extended Universe" has never been officially announced by DC Entertainment as the name for the film universe and, according to other media, spread through a journalist who is said to have come up with the name "DCEU" as a joke. It is still in circulation today because Warner Bros. Entertainment has not yet offered a name of its own for its cinema universe with superhero films.
