The SG Dynamo Weißwasser celebrated an impressive comeback in the GDR ice hockey championship in 1988/89 . With six wins from as many encounters, they took the title from their arch rivals from SC Dynamo Berlin after seven years, making the Lausitzers the first to march through in the play-offs .
In the determination of the best, the series winner of the past few years, now renamed SG Dynamo Fritz Lesch Berlin , fought back the title he had lost in the previous season. Together with the dethroned runner-up from the BSG unit Weißwasser , the "old squad" of the two top division clubs, made up of former national players, determined the performance level of the A group. After the long-time medalist Motor Bad Muskau had been relegated from the A group last season, the former record winner from Crimmitschau could no longer keep up. Despite constant home advantage and a traditionally large pool of recreational players, the West Saxons took last place this year.
The determination of the best, which has now become a tradition, was held in Crimmitschau. While Group A was playing its finals in March 1989, the teams in Group B met a week earlier in February.

(Last of the B group / B. determination)
(Winner of the elimination of the district champion)
The relegation was supposed to take place in the winter of 1989/90 and did not take place after the canceled district eliminations. The BSG HO Lebensmittel Erfurt thus remained in the B group and started the following season in the determination of the best. Since two participants, BSG Einheit Crimmitschau II and BSG Kraftverkehr Dresden, canceled before the start of the tournament, the free places were filled with BSG AdW Berlin and BSG Aufbau Halle . The field was completed by BSG Spartakus Berlin , which was voluntarily relegated from the A group. The last placed there, BSG Einheit Crimmitschau , was thus allowed to remain in the highest group.
District elimination
