The GDR biathlon championships were held for the 18th time in 1976 and took place from March 5th to 7th in the Zinnwald Hofmannsloch biathlon stadium. Karl-Heinz Wolf won his first and only title in an individual race, as did Manfred Geyer in the sprint. While the biathletes of the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof dominated the individual competitions, the SG Dynamo Zinnwald was able to win the title in the relay competition for the ninth time. Geyer from Oberhof and Eberhard Rösch from Zinnwald won medals in all three competitions.
