The GDR biathlon championships were held for the 16th time in 1974 and took place from March 7th to 10th in the Zinnwald Hofmannsloch biathlon stadium. It was the first title fights after a year off. Frank Pötter won his first and only individual title. Even Karl-Heinz Menz won his only title to the sprint. It was the first title awarded in the new sprint competition. After the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof had interrupted the SG Dynamo Zinnwald series at the last championship , the club took the title back. As in the case of the Oberhofer, however, the second season of the Zinnwälder won before the second season of the Oberhofer. Günter Bartnik won the bronze medal in all three competitions.
