The GDR biathlon championships were held for the 20th time in 1978 and took place in Oberhof from January 16 to 18 . As also internationally, biathlon rifles in caliber 5.6 × 15 mm R were used for the first time . As in the previous year, Klaus Siebert won the sprint and for the first time the individual. He won the titles in all three competitions. For the fifth time in a row and for the eleventh time in total, the SG Dynamo Zinnwald became relay champions.
