GDR championships in biathlon 1979

The GDR biathlon championships were held for the 21st time in 1979 and took place from March 16 to 18 in the Zinnwald Hofmannsloch biathlon stadium. As in the previous year, Klaus Siebert won the individual. Jürgen Grundler won his first and only title in a single race in the sprint. For the sixth time in a row and for the twelfth time in total, the SG Dynamo Zinnwald became relay champions.
