David Stewart (born September 13, 1800 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  January 5, 1858 ibid) was an American politician ( Whig Party ) who represented the state of Maryland for a short time in the US Senate .

After graduating from high school, David Stewart enrolled at the College of New Jersey , now Princeton University . He graduated in 1819 at Union College in Schenectady ( New York ), before the law studied, was admitted to the bar in 1821 and began practicing as a lawyer in Baltimore.

His brief political career began on December 6, 1849, when he was appointed to the US Senate. There he took the place of Reverdy Johnson , who had become US Attorney General a few months earlier . Since he did not run for the official by-election, Stewart had to vacate his place in Congress on January 12, 1850 for Thomas Pratt . He then worked again as a lawyer in Baltimore, where he died in 1858.
