De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian) was a TV show by the Flemish broadcaster Canvas that ran in 2005. She was looking for the greatest Belgian. The Walloon counterpart ran on RTBF and was called Le plus grand Belge . The nominees had to be between 50 BC. And at the time of the installation lived within the boundaries of today's Belgium . Since Belgium only gained its independence in 1830, numerous historical personalities were selected who, for example, lived in the Spanish Netherlands .
