action
Gunslinger California fought in the Civil War; he wants to start over and calls himself Michael Random from a random imprint that he sees. On his way home, he meets William Preston, who also wants to go home. Together they walk through the country that has been bled, destroyed and law-free by civil war. Bob Whittaker and his group of bounty hunters kill petty criminals for a small dollar amount. Preston manages to persuade the single Random to go with him to his family.
When the two of them encounter a violent group of Northerners, they steal a horse from them in order to avoid their brawls. But you will be overtaken; the senior Northerner shoots Preston before everyone leaves. Random delivers news of the death of the victim's family, who take him into the family instead. Helen, William's sister, falls in love with Random.
When the lovers go on a trip to the next town, they get caught in a bank robbery by the criminal Whittaker, with Helen being taken hostage after a shooting and kidnapped. Again, he has to bring bad news to the family before he goes after Whittaker's gang, which he carries out mercilessly. He kills man after man.
Whittaker himself offers him a pact, which Random makes a sham. Together they commit a robbery, then they flee to a hiding place in which Helen is also held captive. Random kills Whittaker in a rough fight. Helen, however, has changed through what she experienced and has lost all happiness. She returns to her home with Random.
criticism
“Director Michele Lupo perfectly captures the final mood of the civil war, to which cameraman Alejandro Ulloa with wonderful autumn shots and composer Gianni Ferrio with his unconventional score contribute a lot. All in all, a very worth seeing late western, which perfectly represents the end of a genre. "
“Although the word“ Abgesang ”sounds a bit pathetic: it fits here perfectly. Because California shows a West that only looks like the western world of yore and in which all illusions of one have completely vanished in cold disillusionment. (...) It teems with images of disintegration and dissolution, both with regard to the surroundings like the people in it. (...) Wonderful! "
"Italo-Westerns with an inconsistent atmosphere and a tense cliché story, which even meaningful photography cannot secure any interest."
"End time westerns in love with their own melancholy."
