action

Defense attorney Nancy Breyers is in love with her client Michael Bosworth. She smuggles a gun into the courthouse where Michael Bosworth's trial for attempted murder is taking place, and helps him escape, killing a police officer. Bosworth's brother Wally and his friend Albert wait in front of the courthouse with a getaway car and bring the fugitive out of town.

The criminals raid the Cornell family's home and take the residents hostage. To ensure that nothing happens to them, the family, consisting of the married couple Tim and Nora Cornell, the 15-year-old daughter May and the eight-year-old son Zack, should pretend to the neighbors and everyone who rings the doorbell that everything is as usual. The troubled Cornells marriage is strengthened again under the tension of the hostage situation. A real estate agent who walks by is coldly murdered by Bosworth.

One of the hostage-takers wants to leave and takes the body with him. He is discovered on his escape and shot when he does not surrender.

The FBI -Agentin Brenda Chandler has the defender Nancy Breyers suspected and allows them to pursue. While her colleagues want to storm the house at gunpoint, she wants to wait until the hostage-takers come out of the house. When Tim is supposed to get the car, Chandler gives him a gun, from which he takes the bullets.

When Wally goes to the getaway car with the defense attorney, they discover an FBI agent. A shooting begins, in which FBI agents and Wally are injured, and they retreat into the house. Tim takes the gun from the dying Wally and finally points it at Bosworth, who threatens Nora. When Bosworth pulls the trigger and nothing happens, Nora escapes and Tim drags him out of the house. Bosworth keeps the unloaded gun in hand and is eventually shot by the police outside.

criticism

The editors of kino.de judged: “With his remake of the Bogart classic 'On a day like everyone else' as an ice-cold psychological thriller, Michael Cimino is trying to tie in with masterpieces such as Those Going Through Hell and Heaven's Gate . Starring Mickey Rourke ( Wilde Orchidee ), Anthony Hopkins ( The Silence of the Lambs ) and Mimi Rogers ( The Man in the Background ), Cimino's weak script full of superficial characterizations only partially succeeds in making people in extreme situations exciting and credible. It remains a masterfully photographed piece of suspense with great moments. "

The Bayerische Rundfunk concluded: "Cimino voted for the occupation of the charismatic psychopath Michael Bosworth the early 90s on his career peak standing Mickey Rourke ( Angel Heart , The Wrestler ), with whom he at in 1985 of the Dragon Year had worked. Perfectly complemented by well-known actors like Anthony Hopkins ( The Silence of the Lambs , Nixon ) and Mimi Rogers ( The Man in the Background , The Doors ), he succeeded in creating a stylized, exciting thriller that demands a lot of nerves from the audience. "

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on October 5, 1990 that the film was a modern version of the 1955 film On A Day Like Any Other, starring Humphrey Bogart . Ebert described the plot as idiotic. The film has more style than substance.

Hal Hinson sneered in the Washington Post on October 10, 1990 that Michael Bosworth's character had an IQ of "over 130" and asked why he was not acting accordingly. The one-dimensional characters would not claim the actors' talents.

The editors of cinefacts.de found: "The film adaptation of the novel On a day like any other by Joseph Hayes shines above all through the achievements of Mickey Rourke and Anthony Hopkins."

Awards

Mickey Rourke was nominated for the Golden Raspberry for the worst actor for this film and Wild Orchid in 1991 .
