The Addams Family is a computer-animated film that was released on October 11, 2019 and is a sequel to the television series The Addams Family and the Addams Family films from 1991, 1993 and 1998.

The film was released in Germany on October 24, 2019. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan , the screenplay was written by Matt Lieberman and Pamela Pettler .

The film starts with the marriage of Gomez Addams and Mortica Frump, which is interrupted by an angry mob . The couple flee together with Uncle Fester and Ice Cold Hands, while the rest of the family grapples with the people. They drive to New Jersey in search of a place to stay and on the way find their future butler Lurch on the street, who is in a straitjacket from a madhouse . The Addams family settles in that same madhouse on a high hill. 13 years later they set up their house, which is inhabited by a ghost in this film, and had two children, Wednesday and Pugsley. It becomes clear that the family has had no contact with the outside world for 13 years. Because of the thick fog that surrounds their property, they did not notice that a reality TV show host by the name of Margaux Needle had drained the swamps around the hill and built a - in their opinion - perfect housing estate . In her series, she helps people by redesigning their houses and refurbishing them in pastel colors. Margaux Needle's daughter, Parker Needle, rides her bike up the hill and rings the bell. Only when the doorbell rings at the gate of the property does Wednesday realize that there is an outside world. Meanwhile, Pugsley has to prepare for his sword mazurka , which is a test to find out if he is a real Addams. The Addams drive into town with Uncle Fester, who has meanwhile arrived, and, as in the past, encounter incomprehension and fear towards them. Margaux Needle now learns that there is still a house high up on the hill that does not fit into the cityscape and could reduce the sales figures of her houses due to the terrible sight.

Wednesday is open-minded and interested in the way of life of the city's residents. She even starts going to school there voluntarily and befriends Parker. Both discover that they are dissatisfied with their parents and begin to teach each other about their own way of life in order to shock their mothers . Wednesday wears a hair clip with a pink unicorn and later a pink suit, while Parker wears black clothes, uses black make-up , dyes her hair black and partially cuts it off. As a punishment, her mother takes her cell phone away.

Gomez and Fester now have big problems with Pugsley. He knows how to handle explosives , but he cannot handle the sword. If he cannot learn this in a day, he will be cast out of the family. The first relatives are slowly arriving, visiting the city and spreading great fear there despite its peaceful nature.

Wednesday and Parker search the Needles house for the cell phone. In the mother's craft room, they find a switch that leads them to an underground control room. On screens you can see the residents of the city in their homes and it turns out that all residents are monitored day and night. At that moment, Margaux enters the room and locks both of them in her attic so that they don't ruin today's TV premiere. Via an app that everyone in the city owns and believes everything that is written, Margaux calls for the Addams to be driven out of the city with the help of a catapult . The city gathers, residents light virtual torches on their smartphones and march in the direction of the Addams house.

All guests have now arrived there and celebrate the sword mazurka Pugsleys. When he is supposed to perform his sword dance after a short ritual , he fails. But the announcement of his repudiation is interrupted by a projectile from the catapult that hits the house. Even the spirit of the house flees for fear of destruction . Little by little the house is devastated by the catapult. Gomez reminds his son of the point of the ritual, which is to show that you can protect your family. With the help of detonators, Pugsley shows that he can do this and uses them to destroy the projectiles approaching the catapult . But the house threatens to collapse and the entire family is trapped in a corner of the house. The moment the roof falls down on those present, Wednesday and Parker, who have since escaped from captivity, come to the rescue on the tree next to the house. Everyone is saved from the tree and dropped off in front of the house. Wednesday and Parker tell the people of the city that they have been watched, and the mood turns against Margaux, who is now fleeing back to the city herself. The people of the city realize they were unfair to the Addams just because they are different from them. All together are helping rebuild the Addams house. The spirit of the house comes back into the house and it looks just like it did before. In return for saving the family, Pugsley becomes a real Addams after all. Subsequently, the town began to be inhabited by people and relatives of the Addams, and Margaux met and worked with Uncle Fester.

The film grossed around $ 203 million worldwide on a budget of around $ 24 million.

The film received mixed reviews. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film received 44 percent positive ratings, on the Filmstarts page, users gave 2.8 out of 5 possible stars and the press 2.5 out of 5 stars, with The Hollywood Reporter giving the worst one star rating. The film service assesses The Addams Family as "a satire with biting details, then again tame , whose critical stance dissolves completely towards the end in favor of harmony ."

Trivia

• The license plate number of Gomez and Mortica's car is "Chas 1938", a reference to the nickname of Addams inventor Charles Addams and the year of the first Addams cartoon.
• Gomez talks to Pugsley about a "holy hand grenade," an item from Monty Python's Knight of the Coconut .
• Wednesdays Octopus Socrates lives in a cup that resembles depictions of the hemlock cup.
• At the end of the film, the characters recreate the intro of the original Addams series from 1964.

Differences from the old Addams movies and series

• The ice-cold hand wears a wristwatch and has one eye.
• Unlike in the original series, the grandmother is the mother of Gomez and not of Mortica.
