The Borgias (2006)
The Borgias is the title of a Spanish-Italian co-production produced in 2006 , which, compressed into a feature film, tells of the most important historical events in the life and work of the Spanish aristocratic family Borgia . The director was Antonio Hernández , who can also be seen in a supporting role as Cardinal Giovanni Battista Orsini .
action
The Spanish Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia bought the votes of the College of Cardinals through simony . As Pope he calls himself Alexander VI. He then made his son Cesare cardinal, his son Juan gonfalonier of the Roman armed forces and forced his children Lucrezia and Jofré into arranged marriages in order to forge alliances with powerful Italian families. His opponents are murdered in cold blood. In the Vatican City itself he keeps a mistress with the beautiful Giulia Farnese ; He is also said to have incest with his daughter Lucrezia. When the Sforza family no longer fits into Alexander's concept, he forces his daughter to divorce her allegedly impotent husband Giovanni. Lucrezia withdraws to a monastery where she becomes pregnant by Perotto, a confidante of her father. Cesare then kills Perotto. But Juan also repeatedly comes into conflict with the Italian families. And so one day the Vatican City is shaken by the news of the murder of Juan. There are many suspects, including his brother Cesare. He then takes off his cardinal robe and becomes a soldier. Since Caterina Sforza, a powerful enemy of his father, almost wanted to poison him, he goes to war against the Sforzas and takes Caterina to Rome as a prisoner of war .
But even within the walls of Rome there are more and more people who want the Borgias to be ousted from office and dignity. One day Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere invites Pope Alexander VI. and Cesare at a banquet. Here Cesare and Alexander are poisoned. While Cesare barely survives, the Pope dies in agony. His successor in office, Cardinal della Rovere, now Pope Julius II, sent Cesare to Spain. Here Cesare is ambushed and thrown into prison. He escapes three years later. But the Pope's mercenaries are hunting him. One day he is killed in a losing battle.

Historical deviations
Although the film portrays many events accurately and is therefore considered very authentic, there are still some deviations from the history.
- The sequence of the conclave at the beginning of the film is shown completely wrong. In the film, the cardinals have to say aloud the name of the cardinal they want to be the new Pope. In truth, the election takes place secretly by means of a written vote.
- Jofré Borgia is played by Eloy Azorín , an actor who was 29 years old at the time of filming. However, the historical Jofré Borgia was 13 years old when he married Sancha of Aragon, so 16 years younger.
- Towards the end of the film it is suggested that Alexander VI. Cardinal della Rovere is elected Julius II. The short pontificate of Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius III. selected is hidden.
- The conflict with France, the entry of Charles VIII's troops into Rome and the formation of the Holy League, important aspects of Alexander's pontificate, are neither mentioned nor shown in the film.
