Digimon Adventure: ( Japanese デ ジ モ ン ア ド ベ ン チ ャ ー: Dejimon Adobenchā:) is the eighth season of the Digimon franchise and is considered a retelling of the first TV series of the same name, Digimon , which takes place in 1999 and was also released this year. It is told with the same 16 main characters.

It was first broadcast in Japan on April 5, 2020 on Fuji TV .

Basics

Digimon

Digimon are living beings that were created from digital data . The term is derived from Digital Monsters (German digital monsters ); every name of a digimon ends with the syllable -mon . The Digimon in the Digital World can at least stay online. Each Digimon can be assigned to a genus , for example the reptiles to which Agumon belongs. Some are able to communicate verbally with people. Others, on the other hand, are less sensible, are guided by animal instincts and mainly hunt and defend their territories. Every Digimon has at least one special attack , i.e. an ability that goes beyond normal hitting, kicking, etc. If a Digimon is able to communicate using human languages, it usually calls the name of the ability before or during the execution. Examples are Birdramon's Meteor Wing or Togemon 's Bang Bang stitch . Even the less sensible Digimon are given fixed names for their individual special attacks.

Digimon have no genders and cannot reproduce. They are born from eggs. Since there is no known case that a Digimon died of natural causes, his life can only be ended by previous violence. When he dies, his body disintegrates into data fragments that materialize again as an egg. After a while the Digimon will be reborn from it. There are at least six different phases, called levels, that a Digimon goes through in the course of his life: baby, training, rookie, champion, ultra and mega. Every Digimon starts its life cycle on the first level and develops at different speeds with advancing age. Since there are only a few Digimon on the baby level in relation to the following levels, there is no uniform development structure for the respective first form and beyond. For example, a Punimon, which is the earliest form of Yamato's Gabumon, can take a different course of development, but this path can cross again with that of Yamato's partner at one or more points, so that it also becomes one at the champion level, for example Developed Garurumon. The course of development of each digimon, once taken, remains the same after rebirths. With a development (Japanese 進化 ; Shinka , dt. "Evolution") the attack power of a Digimon increases as well as it accepts a new attack and discards its previous one. With a few exceptions, his body also changes. It holds a level once it has been reached and does not decline. The situation is different with Digimon who work with a human partner: With their Digivice, a palm-sized device, they are able to raise their Digimon partner's level within seconds. A development brought about in this way requires a high level of trust in the Digimon partner and one's own strength of character. The development is not permanent: Depending on the energy used by the digimon, it falls back to at least the rookie level or below.

Worlds

In addition to the human world two more shows: the "Network" (or "network") and the "Digital World" (dt. Digital World ). There is an asynchrony of time between the three worlds . For a minute in the digital world, only a few moments pass in the human world. The network is also affected by this phenomenon, but the flow of time differs depending on the proximity to one of the other worlds. This means that a body that is close to the network exit to the human world experiences only a slight difference to the human world, but a significantly larger difference to the digital world. Communication in this asynchronicity can be harmonized with one another through the use of digivices.

The network, which also includes the Internet , was created by people and serves, among other things, as one of the transitions from the human world to the digital world and vice versa. It consists entirely of data that has taken forms. Both humans and Digimon can be physically there. In the network, it is possible to move around both on foot and across streams, and thus faster. Electronic devices that are in the network can receive information from the human world, but cannot send it there. Electronic devices and computer systems in the human world can be controlled from the network and commands can be executed through them. Special areas are provided for the respective network structures, which can also be identified.

The Digital World is the home of the Digimon. It was created from data, but it is more like the human world than the web. It contains organic materials such as water or fruit that people can also drink or eat. The digital world is divided into several continents, for example cloud . There is a transition to the other two worlds. It is only possible to use electronic devices to a limited extent in it. Before the start of the plot, there was a war between the light, led by the rulers of good - a Digimon mega-level association - and the dark, commanded by the dark Digimon . Ultimately, the light triumphed and also put the Dark Digimon to flight, but the Digital World suffered considerable damage and the rulers of good lost their lives. Since then, there has been a status quo and the darkness is gathering strength again to take over the Digital World. Their influence also expands into the net and beyond into the human world.

action

In the middle of 2020 there will be widespread network disruptions in the Japanese capital Tokyo and its surroundings: traffic lights flash excessively and irregularly, advertisements on screens are filled with illegible text. Also because the causes are unclear, the news is quick to talk about cyber terrorism .

One of the main characters, fifth grader Taichi Yagami, prepares for an upcoming summer camp while his mother and younger sister Hikari are in the Shibuya district . With the arrival of Koshiro Izumi, he learns that his family is in danger. So they both rush to Shibuya to save her. When Taichi reaches a platform, he suddenly finds himself alone on the network; with a palm-sized device and an unknown creature in front of him, which turns out to be his Digimon partner Agumon. Both must quickly defend themselves against numerous hostile algomon. After defeating their opponents, Taichi's family is out of danger; he and his Digimon, meanwhile, meet Yamato Ishida and his partner Gabumon, with whom they want to work together to eliminate the other disruptions in the network for which the Algomon are responsible. Ultimately, they meet a constantly evolving Algomon, to which they almost succumb when Taichi's and Yamato's partners merge to form Omegamon and defeat it. Separated from Yamato and the Digimon, Taichi returns to his world and a few days later drives to summer camp with Koshiro.

After their return, the crisis in Tokyo worsens again. Taichi and the newcomer Sora Takenouchi unintentionally leave their world and end up in the Digital World, where Sora meets her partner Piyomon and Taichi again on Agumon. Together they learn that the digital world as well as the human world and the network are threatened by darkness. Therefore they should search for the holy Digimon on the digital world continent Cloud in order to defeat the darkness with his help. On their way they meet other allies with Mimi Tachikawa and Palmon as well as Jo Kido and Gomamon. Together with the new Yamato with Gabumon and Koshiro with Tentomon, they set out to find their destination.

characters

Protagonists

The protagonists of the plot are eight children who live in or near Tokyo and go to primary school there, as well as their respective Digimon partners. Only Yamato lives further away in the country. Hikari and Taichi as well as Takeru and Yamato are each siblings, the latter live separately from each other and have different family names. The Digimon in the Digital World consider and describe them as chosen children who are to have a decisive influence on the fate of their world. Together with their Digimon partners, they face their opponents in battles. The Digimon partners reach different levels and then fall back at least to the rookie level, whose names are given here. An exception is Hiraki's Tailmon, which can mainly hold the champion level. The characters are as follows:

  • Taichi Yagami ( 八神 太 一 ; Yagami Taichi ) is eleven years old and is in fifth grade with Sora. He lives with his little sister Hikari in the same high-rise complex as Koshiro in a Tokyo district. He is considered reliable with a high sense of responsibility and leads the group of children, subordinating his own goals to those of the group. His partner is Agumon .
  • Yamato Ishida ( 石田 ヤ マ ト ; Ishida Yamato ) is fifth grader and the older brother of Takeru. He has a different family name than his brother and lives in a lake house outside of Tokyo. Yamato sees itself more as a loner, wants to solve problems himself and not put others in danger. Therefore, he does not always share Taichi's decisions immediately, but both can trust each other and work together. His partner is Gabumon .
  • Koshiro Izumi ( 泉 光子 郎 ; Izumi Kōshirō ) lives with the Yagamis in the same apartment complex in a Tokyo district. He is considered reserved and also inquisitive as well as extremely tech-savvy. He always works with a convertible . In this way he maintains contact with other worlds via the Internet and prepares information for the chosen children. His partner is Tentomon .
  • Sora Takenouchi ( 武 之 内 空 ; Takenouchi Sora ) is a fifth grader and goes to the same class as Taichi. Both have known each other since early childhood. She is very popular at her school across all grades. Your partner is Piyomon .
  • Jo Kido ( 城 戸 丈 ; Kido Jō ) is sixth grader. He comes from a family of doctors and is also aiming for a career in medicine. Due to his ambition, his focus is therefore on the career after graduating from primary school soon. As the eldest member of the chosen children, he regards himself as their leader, but receives no encouragement. His partner is Gomamon .
  • Mimi Tachikawa ( 太 刀 川 ミ ミ ; Tachikawa Mimi ) is a fourth grader and granddaughter of the chairman of the Tachikawa Heavy Industry Company . As a result, she grows up in more affluent circumstances. Sometimes she insists on her own needs, but knows how to rank in favor of the group. Your partner is Palmon .
  • Takeru Takaishi ( 高 石 タ ケ ル ; Takaishi Takeru ) is second grader and, along with Hikari, the youngest member of the chosen children . He is the younger brother of Yamato, from whom he lives separately in Tokyo. His partner is Patamon .
  • Hikari Yagami ( 八神 ヒ カ リ ; Yagami Hikari ) is Taichi's younger sister and lives with her family in a high-rise complex. Together with Takeru, she is the youngest member of the chosen children. Your partner is Tailmon .

Level history

The following table provides an overview of the Digimon partner developments and is based on the levels already shown in the episodes. For Takerus and Hikaris partners, the partner's rookie or champion level serves as the standard basis; their Digimon have not yet been introduced into the plot.

Antagonists

The chosen children and their Digimon have to face not only the disturbances in the human world but also hostile Digimon that hinder them on their way and in their goals and threaten their lives. Due to the war that last raged in the Digital World, they see themselves primarily as an enemy in the face of darkness, which is itself doing everything it can to kill the chosen children and their Digimon.

Algomon

Algomon is the first antagonist of the children. The Digimon is on the training level. Algomon appear in this form in large numbers, but prove to be weak in terms of strength because of their level. However, they are able to cause serious disruptions in the network: Among other things, they manipulate power supplies in the human world from there and hack into highly secured computer networks in order to cause irreversible damage. In addition, it is possible for at least some Algomon to rise to a higher level without great effort and to carry out several development steps one after the other. All five known levels of Algomon have the same name, but differ externally and in terms of strength.

Devimon and Ogremon

Devimon is a champion-level Digimon and devotee of darkness. Due to the Soundbirdmon he uses, it is able to manipulate the beings of other Digimon and make them submissive. It also maintains contact with its subordinates through the Soundbirdmon. It can rule over Digimon at the higher ultra level with the help of miasm that is transmitted to them. Just like darkness in general, it also wants the death of the chosen children and their Digimon and for this goal does not take any account of its subordinates.

Ogremon, who is himself at the champion level and coordinates the attacks of the manipulated Digimon on site, is a slave to him without manipulation. It is able to communicate in human language, but only with a few words in incomplete sentences. It is considered a proud Digimon who defends its honor at all costs. Its special attack is the Kaiserfaust , which fires an aura at its opponents with a punch. Unlike Devimon, who stays in the background, it actively intervenes in battles.

development

On January 17, 2020, the announcement of a new season was initially discussed in various Japanese blogs. The title Digimon Adventure: Ψ came up several times , referring to the Greek letter Psi . On the same day, the Japanese magazine V Jump announced details directly related to the series for the first time, including a poster showing the "chosen children" and their partners. The designs differ slightly from those from 1999, whereby the clothes are largely the same and differ almost exclusively in terms of color. The Digivice held by Taichi, however, shows visually more striking changes. In contrast to the first story, Hikari, Taichi's sister, is mentioned at the beginning of the plot, which was only introduced in 1999 at the end of the first half of the story. Only Taichi's and Yamato's partners, Greymon and Garurumon, are shown on a higher level, while Takerus and Hikari's partners are completely absent. A use of Psi, as initially expected, was not implemented in the title announced by Tōei Animation, but in the graphic that represents the Japanese title, the colon followed by a specially designed symbol. The transcription given below in Latin letters ends after the colon. The logo presented for the western world uses the word Digimon Adventure: in capitals , followed by the designed symbol. In V Jump , two people in charge, producer Hiroyuki Sakurada and screenwriter Atsuhiro Tomioka, commented on the series in an interview. When asked, Sakurada said that the series pays special attention to the fight scenes, with the Digimon more precisely adjusting to the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents. Tomioka announced that as many different Digimon as possible would be shown. On January 20, Toei Animation published a teaser referring to the 1999 series and announcing a "new adventure" for the protagonists.

Tōei Animation released the first trailer for the series on March 6th, showing elements from the human and digital world. In addition, the first combat operations of Agumon against other Digimon are shown and a completed development of Agumon to its next higher level is indicated. On March 16, Toei Animation published the second trailer for the series, which, in addition to the scenes shown in the first trailer, provides the characters Agumon and Taichi with dubbing voices for the first time. In addition, the completed development of Agumon to Greymon, already indicated in the first trailer, is shown as well as the execution of his attack Mega Flame , whereby the animation used uses more details than the series from 1999.

From March 30, Tōei Animation advertised the new series in the Shibuya Stream - a high-rise complex in the Shibuya district of Tokyo , in which the animes of the franchise, among other things - and in the vicinity of the associated train station for the new series with posters and animations projected onto the entrance stairs of the complex the Digimon represented in a small number of pixels. In addition, Tōei switched a website online, on which a short message can be placed after selecting from 30 Digimon, which are then displayed one after the other by the Digimon via speech bubble on the website. For this purpose, Tōei provides wallpapers one after the other for download after reaching different numbers of contributions.

In August 2020 the Japanese platform What's in? Toyko talks to Sakurada and director Masato Mitsuka about the background of the series. Sakurada explained that after the storyline of Digimon until the conclusion by Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna wanted to create a new story that should appeal to the current generation of children. In the plot of the adventure stories at hand, one saw an approach to opening up the franchise to the new target group. With regard to the series title, the written version of the slogan Digimon Adventure and a Digivice were chosen, which will be shown as a recurring element in the series. The colon used in the title connects the lettering with the symbol, but neither the colon nor the symbol is pronounced or written out. Sakurada also refers to the first three episodes of the series and the danger of an atomic strike they represent. These would have the goal of representing the seriousness of the plot. In view of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which was already in place when the broadcast began in April of that year, he decided to make the Digital World more open in order to create a balance, as people spent more time at home and during the pandemic spend less outdoors. Mitsuka, who had already worked with Sakurada on Digimon Fusion and Dragon Ball Super , saw a need to offer the champion-level Digimon Greymon, the main protagonist Digimon , fighting options beyond his special attack Mega Flame . He wanted to give Greymon more room to maneuver by depicting ordinary physical attacks than was the case in Digimon . As a core element of the story, Mitsuka put the focus on the cooperation between the chosen children and their Digimon in direct combat operations, in order to encourage an ever closer bond with the passage of time.

music

Takayoshi Tanimoto (here 2016) had previously worked with songs for the Digimon franchise.

Due to the death of Kōji Wada in 2016, who tri on Digimon , Digimon 02 and Digimon Adventure. was responsible for the openings, a new artist was chosen for the opening song for the first time in an adventure production of the franchise. Takayoshi Tanimoto interprets the title Mikakunin Hikousen (Japanese 未 確認 飛行 船 ; German: unidentified airship ), of which about one and a half minutes are played. Tanimoto already worked musically on Digimon Fusion , with the song One Vision for Digimon Tamers and with the ending track Yeah! Break! Care! Break! for Dragon Ball Z Kai . The ending is formed by the title Kuyashi-sa wa tane (Japanese 悔 し さ は d; eng. Regret is a seed ) by Chiai Fujikawa ; a one-minute excerpt from the song is used here.

With the fourth episode, Bādoramon hishō , you introduced an insert song for the first time, which is used for the champion-level development scenes as well as the directly following actions. The song is titled Be The Winners . Likewise, for the first time in a row ten, Kōtetsu no chō shinka , shown development on the ultra level, the title X-Treme Fight is played. Both songs are sung by Tanimoto like the opening. A CD with the soundtrack of the series was released on August 19, 2020. The previously known should also include at least two titles that were not published up to and including the eighth episode.

A first partial release of the soundtrack for the series is planned for September 30, 2020. This should contain 34 titles, 32 of which come from the person in charge of the series for music, Toshihiko Sabashi. The remaining two form the opening of Tanimoto and the ending of Fujikawa.

Broadcast and publication

Tōei Animation announced at the same time as the presentation of the series on January 17, 2020, that it will be broadcast on Sunday morning from April 2020. On March 6, it announced the series would be added to Fuji Television's programming starting April 5. The first of 66 targeted episodes of the series is entitled Tōkyō Dejitaru Kuraishisu (Japanese 東京 デ ジ タ ル ク ラ イ シ ス ; German Tokyo digital crisis ). Crunchyroll secured the streaming rights and simulcasts the series with subtitles in nine languages, including German. The original names and terms from Japanese are largely used for the German subtitles .

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and their individual situation in Japan , Tōei Animation and Fuji TV suspended both the broadcast of the series and the simulcast on streaming portals worldwide until further notice. At that point, three episodes had been broadcast. During the suspension, Toei Animation published a video on April 30th, which, in addition to a summary of the episodes already shown, also presents previously unpublished material, which should come from the fourth episode and beyond.

The series' official Twitter account announced on May 31st that it would be resumed on Fuji TV from June 7th. From this point onwards, a weekly episode should be broadcast again, starting with the first episode. Accordingly, the first broadcast of the series continued on June 28 with the fourth episode. For its part, Tōei Animation commented on the resumption on June 4 with two videos. On the one hand, in addition to further depictions of the upcoming plot, more detailed characterizations of the protagonists are given for the first time and insights into the circumstances of the Digital World and the development stages of the Digimon are given. On the other hand, fight scenes as well as the Digimon Ogremon and Devimon are shown, who were opponents of the children and their Digimon at the beginning of the plot of the 1999 series.

The series is to be released in Japanese stores on Blu-ray Disc and DVD from December 2, 2020 . The first box should contain the first twelve episodes as well as other material, including interviews with those responsible for the series.

Episode list

reception

  • Karan Han from Polygon does not see a reboot in the series that also wants to address new target groups. Instead, the series aims to present as much fan service as possible for the existing audience in as little time as possible. In particular, she considers the rapid timing of the Digimon’s developments to be a problem, as well as the focus on the plot instead of the character development of the chosen children.
  • Joshua Graves of Comic Book Recourses broadened the view to the opinions of the audience and saw different reactions from them. He praised the seriousness of the series, which he made using the example of the impending nuclear strike provoked by the Algomon; in addition, the very early point in time when dealing with such a situation, when only three of the chosen children were introduced to the plot. On the other hand, like Han, he criticizes the speed of developments. Graves sees the plot of the first three episodes too close to the franchise film Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game! and assumes that some scenes from the film were taken over in the series.
